During the 20th century the living people mostly focused on getting the main needs to survive. Things like food, water, shelter, and clothing. They had to work to get these things or have others work for them. Although people didn’t push to get theses items and there needs. After the world war ll, people started buying more things they needed. The historian William Leach says it actually began in the U.S. around the 1900s. Stores bang to grow and became a huge thing. Later on those stores turned into large corporations. People started buying products to make even bigger profits off of.

The knights of Labor was one of the first major labor unions in the United States. It was founded in 1869 by a group of garment workers in Philadelphia. Unlike many other unions at the time, the Knight of Labor welcomed workers from all trades and backgrounds, including women and African Americans. they aimed to improve working conditions, reduce working hours, and increase wages for workers. The Knight of Labor organized strikes and protest to fight for workers' rights. The union's influence declined after the Haymarket Affair in 1886, a violent clash between police and workers in Chicago. Despite its decline, the Knights of Labor set the stage for future labor movements and unions.
