Answer: (Educause) The purpose of using learning analytics is to 1. Increase efficiency 2. Expand the impact 3. Respond to the demands for greater accountability 4. Improve teaching and learning. “Learning analytics in the academic domain is focused on the learner, gathering data from course management and student information systems in order to manage student success, including early warning processes where a need for interventions may be warranted.”

The advantages of using learning analytics are that administrators and educators can make school wide improvements based on what is actually happening in the learning process due to the valuable insight produced by the students results on assessments. However, improvements need to be made, practicing analytics is fairly new in education, so understanding how activities such as teaching, and support services contribute to learners’ outcome is not possible in the we currently collect and analysis data. Data is becoming very powerful when collected and used correctly.

Answer 2: I envision using learning analytics to enhance student achievement. Starting by improving a teacher’s assignment as far as their class roll and schedule, the class learning modalities and curriculum, as well as classroom speakers, field trips, technology used and other support services. Next, we can set up the use of learning management systems intentionally to promote student success rather than trial and error methods. I am also eager to see the outcomes of data on student engagement and behavior. Since analytics are still fairly new in education, we still need to improve the way data is collected, used and data-driven decisions are made. Lastly, we can track summative and formative assessments from students, that will shape lesson plans and activities used to directly impact student engagement and achievement.
