1. Babe Ruth's Farewell Speech- "Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. You know how bad my voice sounds. Well, it feels just as bad. You know, this baseball game of ours comes up from the youth. That means the boys. And after you're a boy and grow up to play ball, then you come to the boys you see representing clubs today in your national pastime. The only real game in the world, I think, is baseball. As a rule, people think that if you give boys a football or a baseball or something like that, they naturally become athletes right away. But you can't do that in baseball. You got to start from way down, at the bottom, when the boys are six or seven years of age. You can't wait until they're 15 or 16. You got to let it grow up with you, if you're the boy. And if you try hard enough, you're bound to come out on top, just as these boys here have come to the top now. There have been so many lovely things said about me today that I'm glad to have had the opportunity to thank everybody. Thank you."
Babe Ruth is considered to be one of the best baseball players to ever play the game. He holds records in all time slugging and OPS. He is top ten in many other categories such as all time home runs, all time runs, and batting average. In addition to being a great batter he was also a pitcher. He won four World Series in his career which is quite an accomplishment. This was his farewell speech he gave after retiring from baseball. His retirement was a sad day in baseball as so many players and people looked up to him. Babe forever remains as one of the most iconic players to ever play the sport of baseball.

2.

Bobby Jones achieved the grand slam of golf in seven years. The grand slam is when a player wins all four majors; The Masters, The PGA Championship, The U.S Open, and The Open. Very few players achieve this as these four tournaments have the highest level of competition. Bobby was considered to be one of the best player's in this time. He qualified for the Amateur Championship at 14. Along with being a great golfer, Bobby was also quite a student. He passed the bar and had his license to perform law. This picture is from a newspaper called the Trenton Evening Times the day after he won his Grand Slam.

3. This is a picture of the official record in the Chicago Black Sox trial. In 1919, the Black Sox were accused of throwing the world series and losing intentionally. They were accused of being bribed by people who bet a lot of money against them. Some players claimed that their life was at stake with some gangsters and mob leaders. "Shoe-less" Joe Jackson is the one giving the testimony in the picture. He admits that him and others on the team were bribed to lose the world series on purpose. He gave names which led to a lot of arrests. He got some immunity out of this.

Sports have existed as far back as history can go. However, they flourished in the 1920s. Sports emerged as an outlet for Americans during the roaring '20s and served as an enjoyable activity for families. The journalists of the time glorified famous athletes and made them seem larger than life. These famous athletes came from a variety of sports. The most recognized included Babe Ruth (baseball), Joe Jackson(baseball), Harold Grange (football) and Jack Dempsey (boxing). According to 1920-30.com, "The sports stars of this era remain well known even today, such was their fame and the publicity they received for their amazing careers, endorsements or promotions. Very few will not have heard of Babe Ruth in baseball, Jack Dempsey in boxing". The way these characters were worshiped displays just how significant athletics was at the time. The achievements of some of the nation's great athletes lasted as records for decades. For example, Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in the 1927 season stood until 1961 when Roger Maris beat it by one. Sports provided an opportunity for leisure time. Sporting stars gave Americans figures to look up to.

There were many events that happened in the 1920's that had a great impact on sports in today's age. One main one was The Black Sox scandal. This scandal paved the way into the elimination of corruption in sports. This was happening in so many other teams in different sports all across the country. Corruption in sports wasn't being recognized until this scandal took off in the media. A bunch of other teams also got charged with throwing games/bribery. Many other important sports figures paved the way for future athletes. People such as Babe Ruth are still being idolized by kids today and people strive to be just like him. There were many other iconic figures like Babe such as Joe Jackson, Jack Dempsey, and Bobby Jones. These people brought their v respective sports to light and inspired many young kids that grew up to play the sports and then they inspired future generations. Records from this time in sports are still in place as of today such as Babe's OPS. The 20's was a critical time in sports that led to a brighter future in sports.
