Provence has a lengthy history of human habitation and a resultant reputation for the activities of fishing, hunting and wild-plant harvesting. Known also for its pastoral work, the region has focused largely on the domestication of wild animals throughout the years.

The German-Celtics were the initial inhabitants of the area, even though they were later assimilated into the Greek and Roman cultures that gradually infiltrated the region around 600 BC. At this moment in time, the Greeks founded a colony and named it Massalia (present-day Marseille) on the Provencal coast. The Greeks who infiltrated the region were the ones who introduced the grape vine and the olive to the area and made both plants such a significant part of the region's culture.

The province often had the defense of Rome against its adversaries, whether they be pirates or Celts threatening invasion, and thereby created protection for their trade route to Spain. Under Roman rule, Provence flourished, but as the Roman's jurisdiction shrank, so did the prosperity of Provence. Franks had gained in control by 536 and they provided defense to the area against consistent Moorish invasions. Even despite such robust protection, raids still occurred often, and Provence struggled a great deal through the course of the 8th century as a result of such Moorish raids.

Provence became a constituent of the Holy Roman Empire in the year of 1032, and it was hence reigned by a consecutive series of dynasties. Over three hundred years later, in 1481, Provence was claimed by the French, and its government has since changed from a monarchy to the democracy that it is today.

Finally, the food of Provence is something that all tourists must try. Whether it’s a staple meal like Ratatouille or Bouillabaisse, or more simpler dishes from inner villages, everyone should have the opportunity to try their food. When you observe the food of the Region, you may notice the Italian influence. This is no coincidence, as Provence is almost bordering Italy. Some of the Region’s biggest cities, such as Nice, also have a long deep connection with Italy as well. When visiting France, Provence should definitely be tourists’ top priority.
