In the image below, a teacher uses the phrase in an expression of disappointment to describe the young child's situation stranded at school. Bogost posits that Tamarian speech is so dense and complex that "these five words [referring to "Darmok and Jalad at Tangra"]  are sufficient to direct a whole crew to carry out an entire stratagem over two days’ time, and not by following a script, but by embracing it as a guiding abstraction."
