With context of these two figures, we are presented with a myth that represents hardship, survival, and madness in a place of loneliness: "Nolan and Wilson on the Island." The story is made into myth by the humans back at home. (The video below captures the extent to which Nolan is given a hero's welcome and how the story of his arrival affects his community)

Step 3: Spoken Abstraction Beyond the Myth

Now that the myth has been consolidated into a sentence (an extremely complex and multifacted one), it can be repeated outside of the original's context into a new context while bearing both the symbolic and literal meanings of the signifier. In the image below, a teacher uses the phrase in an expression of disappointment to describe the young child's situation stranded at school. Though dramatic, the myth is recycled into a new context as a result.

I agree with Bogost's belief in the Tamarian language as a "sophisticated aptitude for abstraction" in that an entire myth can be immediately conveyed into a modern pretense. Bogost posits that Tamarian speech is so dense and complex that "these five words [referring to "Darmok and Jalad at Tangra"] are sufficient to direct a whole crew to carry out an entire stratagem over two days’ time, and not by following a script, but by embracing it as a guiding abstraction."

Bogost, Ian. “A ‘Star Trek’ Episode Shows the Next Phase of Human Communication.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 18 June 2014, www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/06/star-trek-tng-and-the-limits-of-language-shaka-when-the-walls-fell/372107/.
