The statement in this quote states a principal in society, but instead of stating it formally and straightforward (example: You cannot understand one's reasons of the sum of their actions unless you are in the same conditions as them), Atticus adds a pinch of humor and metaphorical way of expressing, hence the use of personification in "climbing in one's skin and walking around in it".

(Additional Examples)

Most idioms and personified in general can be considered as aphorism and can be used as rhetorical devices to inspire or warn one to do, not to do, or be concerned in general about the topic being portrayed. Some examples include:

-"Don't cry over spilt milk"

-"Don't judge a book by its cover" (Inspires to not like or dislike one or something primarily due to its appearance)

-"Take the whole nine yards"

-"Don't put all your eggs in one basket" [Inspires to not risk everything you have on the chance of success of one thing (example: GAMBLING)]

-"Once in a blue moon"

-"Don't count your chickens before the eggs have hatched" (Inspires to not have such high hopes for something that might not happen"

-"Curiosity killed the cat"
