Victor has a thirst for knowledge for the supernatural and becomes quite obsessed with his discoveries so much so that it affects his health. “My cheeks have grown pale with study, and my person had become emancipated with confinement.” Victor is saying that he had developed such an unhealthy obsession with his work that it was affecting his well being.

When the monster kills her, she screams knowing she can’t do anything about it. Victor comes in and sees her laying on the bed, questioning why he is here to “relate the destruction of the best hope and the purest creature on earth?”.(Page 89) These words from Victor state how innocent and happy she saw her, she is pure and loves him.

He was neglected by Victor and shunned. This had a major impact on the creature. The very bottom of Maslow's needs were not given to him. We see examples of this in chapter 10.

Here it’s a little less romanticized, but it shows the adventure and experience the character had when he was child.

Humanitarian sympathy for the common man:  Page 50, “The gentle manners and beauty of the cottagers greatly endeared them to me; when they were unhappy, I felt depressed; when they rejoiced, I sympathized with their joys.” As the monster observed the lives of the cottagers, he began to learn and adapt the nature of humans such as the ability to be empathetic. He also learned their vocabulary which he began to admire and wants to be closer to the common man.

Paradoxical combinations:“ He turned on hearing a noise, and perceiving me, shrieked loudly, and quitting the hut, ran across the fields with a speed of which his debilitated from hardly appeared capable” chapter 11 pg. 47. The monster was just observing the cottage wishing he could live in one like it, But a human saw him and got scared because of his looks but in reality the monster meant no harm, he was just admiring the cottage.

Setting: Pg. 33, Chapter 7: “Yet, as I drew nearer home, grief and fear again overcame me. Night also closed around; and when I could hardly see the dark mountains, I felt still more gloomily. The picture appeared a vast and dum scene of evil, ...”
Here we not only get the setting of the character's surroundings but also his feelings, giving us the full idea of what to feel for the rest of the chapter.

supernatural or  otherwise inexplicable events: Page 59, “God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance. Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him”. The religious reference of creation such as God, Satan, and other demons are examples of supernatural beings.  Gothics explore more Anti-Catholic explanations in their perception of religion in society.

Nature: “The very winds whispered in soothing accents, and nature bade me weep no more, then again the kindly influence ceases to act” Chapter 9 pg.42  The description of nature in this quote tells us that he was upset because of his looks, but the soothing winds helped calm him down because the winds were like a mother helping victor not cry anymore.
