Today, I learned how to create a Prezi presentation. PowerPoints are useful but they are sequential. What if you are making a sales presentation and your audience is interested in a topic that is in the middle of your deck? You need to flip through the slides to get there.

Prezi is a conversational presentation program. Double-click a topic on the first slide to display that topic. This let’s you present your deck in any order.

For my first Prezi program, I decided to create a vocabulary presentation to help an ESL student of mine. It’s still a work in progress, but the student and I can choose to start wherever he wants.

Being productive just using my iPhone

Today I decided to learn if I could be productive just using my iPhone (or a smartphone). I’m not in the office and have nothing that is urgent, so it is a good day to see how useful my iPhone is. Some activities I know I can do, check email, social media, and the news.

As a writer, I always like to have access to a word processor. The cloud solves this concern. Google Drive gives me access to Google Docs, OneDrive gives me access to Microsoft Word, iCloud gives me access to Pages, and Zoho gives me access to Writer.

Skype has recently become an important app for me. I teach English as a Second Language online using Skype. Students use Skype to message me or schedule a class. I can quickly respond. The actual teaching is done with a regular computer.

So what am I learning? I can be quite productive using an iPhone/smartphone. Email and social media work well. I can read and send emails and send and receive attachments. Posting and responding to social media is easy.

The camera is useful for taking pictures of notes on a whiteboard. I can share the image and use it for future reference.

Microsoft’s OneNote or Apple’s Note app is good for handwriting notes and drawing. The video app works well for recording short videos to post on YouTube (quick ESL tips).

Last but not least, I can make and receive phone calls. Often, I get so engrossed with apps that I forget that it is a phone.

Today, I learned about the Japanese concept of ikigai. What is this? It is the practice of doing what you love, what you can get paid for, what can help society, and doing what you are good at. It's good advice since it combines both your needs and the needs of society. Helping your community does good for others and makes you feel good. It is the yin and yang of individuality and community.

Ikigai is the right thing for me. As a freelance writer and teacher, it is important for me to focus on what I am good at and what I can get paid for doing. It also serves my need to make the world a little better. Community is important.

Today I learned a useful bit of wisdom from Socrates - we can not think for ourselves if first we don’t come to know ourselves. This is good wisdom for making important decisions for example, investing, accepting a new job, entering a relationship, etc. You need to know who you are, what you like, and what is important to you. Some people want a job that is less exciting but stable, while others enjoy the excitement and unpredictability of a startup. Some people want to live in a city and enjoy the nightlife while others enjoy the small town environment. Learn about and get to know yourself. That is the path to happiness.

Now I teach children.

Teaching children requires modeling or demonstrating

what you want them to do as opposed to telling them. This is especially true if the children are very young, for example, 5, 6, 7, years old. Their English is very limited and most often, they won’t understand your instructions.

Games are very important. They can be the main component of your lesson as opposed to an additional activity.

I love the challenge to teach children. It may be one of the more difficult challenges I’ve encountered.

Music has always been a part of my life; I began playing keyboards at age five and majored in Music Theory at Boston University. Music is my best friend.

Recently, I’ve been under some stress. My work schedule has been in flux, I’ve been busy with some personal development projects, and I’m doing some volunteer work. This has affected my sleep and I tend to overeat when I am tired and stressed. When I work on a project, I zero in on my attention and go full throttle in terms of energy.

I obviously needed a way to relax and regain control. How? I thought back to when I was most happy and relaxed. Simply, it is when I am listening to classical music. That is the key.

I now make time to listen to classical music every day. I’m more relaxed, happy, and in control.

Teaching it to draw a specific cat is time consuming and teaching it to draw a cat in general is even more time consuming.
