The rough ER is a series of double membranes called cisternae, which are dotted with ribosomes along the surface. The ribosomes help the rough ER's function of producing proteins. It is located along the nuclear envelope and attached to the smooth ER. The nuclear envelope produces the ribosomes for the rough ER.

The ribosomes on the surface of the cisternae produce protein molecules. Once synthesized, they gather in the lumen. After enough proteins have gathered, vesicles transport them to the golgi apparatus to continue the process of protein production.
