An important factor for both long and short term goals is budgeting.  If you have a list of where your money is going "you should know where your money is going" (Page 4), you might find places to cut spending, or find extra money floating around so you are able to use it to achieve your goals.
Page 4 also talks about not worrying about your neighbors. Perhaps you have a neighbor who just bough a bunch of plants to make a huge garden. While you would love to compete with them, but you don't have the money, so you settle with a couple small plants and that's it.
