El Coco is a legend found throughout many countries in Latin America and Spain. The legend originated in Galicia, Northern Spain/ Portugal and is similar to our Bogeyman. You can trace this legend back to the 17th century. The legend is used to threaten kids who misbehave and to encourage good behavior in kids. For example parents threaten that if kids do not eat all of their food, the Coco will come take them away. There is also a very old song that parents would sing to their kids in Spain-
"Duérmete niño, duérmete ya...
Que viene el Coco y te comerá."
(Sleep child, sleep now...
Else Coco comes and will eat you.)
The fruit coconut was named by a Spanish explorer Vasco de Gama because when he traveled to Polynesia and saw the fruit, it reminded him of the head of the Coco (bogeyman).

</sub>

La Llorona originates all over Latin America. It is a tale similar to the “Woman in White”. Quite simply La Llorona translates to the crying woman and has many different variations. The best known version includes a woman named María who drowns her children in a river after her husband cheats on her. Later committing suicide in the same river. La Llorona is then trapped between the living and the dead and legend says that she can be heard at night crying out for her children. Some believe if you hear her cries it is a sign that death is coming to your household others believe that she kidnaps children whom resemble her late children.

Alexis Smith

La Casa Matusita. The place of origin is Peru, specifically in the capital city Lima. This is the home of some of the most violent ghosts to have ever roamed the Earth. The story is that a very wealthy man and his family moved into to the yellow house. Because the man was very wealthy he had servants, but he was very harsh towards them. One day the servants decided to lace the man's food with hallucinogenic drugs. They then locked the man and all his guests in the dining room. Soon the servants heard banging, loud screams, pushing, and loud smashing noises coming from the dining room. As the noise subsided they opened the door and saw the horrific crime that had happened. All the people were murdered in extremely violent manners. Blood was all over. The servants couldn't comprehend what they just caused and as a result they all hung themselves in the dining room. This house is still around today and is rumored to be one of the most haunted locations around. Many people have said you can hear strong cries and loud screams coming from the second level of the building.

(Brooke Chase)

The Chupacabra is a legendary creature, with it's first purported sightings reported in Puerto Rico. The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, including goats. The first reported attack eventually attributed to the creatures occurred in March 1995 in Puerto Rico. Eight sheep were discovered dead, each with three puncture wounds in the chest area and completely drained of blood.
The most common description of the chupacabra is that of a reptile-like creature, said to have leathery or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back.[ It is said to be approximately 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 m) high, and stands and hops in a fashion similar to that of a kangaroo. In late October 2010, University of Michigan biologist Barry O'Connor concluded that all the chupacabra reports in the United States were simply coyotes infected with the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei, whose symptoms would explain most of the features of the chupacabra: they would be left with little fur, thickened skin, and rank odor.
(Lexie Alicea)

El Silbón or "The Whistling Man" originated in Los Llanos, Venezuela. The legend goes back to the 19th century. It is a tale about a boy who was an only child, he was spoiled by his parents. One night he demanded his father to hunt for deer meat for dinner. His father wasn't able to complete his task, and the boy became very angry. The boy then stabs his father over and over again, then cuts his stomach open and rips out his intestines. He took them to his mother to cook, his mother became very suspicious at the look of the "meat". She realizes what the boy had done and his grandfather deals with the situation by whipping the boys back until it was bloody. He then rubbed lemon juice and hot peppers in his wounds to make them sting. He put his father's remains in a sack and sent a pack of dogs after him as the boy ran away. Just before the dogs killed the boy, the grandfather cursed him. And that was the origin of the creature known as El Silbón, the whistling man. He is doomed to forever roam the plains. Carrying his sack of bones on his back while whistling a chilling tune. Each night he enters a different home and counts his collection. If you hear him counting, you won't be harmed. But if he goes unnoticed by the time the sun rises, then someone will die and he will add their bones to his collection. (Kenzie Harris)

This legend says that once he reappeared, he did not show as the fisherman he used to be, he came back to be something more fish than man. It is said that his large, knobby knees are his signiture. This creature presents itself to people at lakes and lagoons as a humble fisherman in order to win their trust and confidence only so he can lure them out to the middle of the lake. It is said that once the victims are where he wants them, the fisherman shows his true self and turns men into large, colorful fish and transforms women into siren of the sea. In El Salvador they tell you to avoid the waters in fear of becoming a victim of the fisherman.
(Elena Falbo)

In Honduras folklore, the sisimite is a bipedal upright gorilla-like creature that possesses a head much like a human's with long hair or fur covering its body. It is may also referred to as "the Mexican bigfoot". According to Honduran legends, the Sisimite hunts women. And upon falling in love with one he will claim her as his own, never again to be found. A Honduran explorer and historian, Jesús Aguilar Paz, said that the Sisimite lives in the highest part of the Honduran mountains, in the inaccessible caverns found there. Aguilar also explains that it is not a carnivorous being or a hunter, however, it usually goes down to the village to kidnap women to take them to their cave and rape them.

(Kyle Lazzaro)

The legend goes back into nicaragua. During holy week it is said that you can hear a cart strolling down the street. The cart is filled with bones and is being pulled by two skeletal horses. Some say it is being commanded by the grim reapers himself. If anyone was awake or on the streets while the cart was being pulled, they would be taken by the grim reaper and taken to the underworld. This legend was based on the slavery and colonization in the native american tribes. Native americans who heard colonizers coming to find new slaves would know to run and hide. If they were captured they were usually taken to mines and places of work.
genevieve vonahnen
