Sustainability and Renewable Energy is one of the very few issues that truly has an impact on each and every individual on earth. 

The institutions that are considered stakeholders number in the thousands, maybe more, but some of primary stakeholders are organizations such as the United Nations, The Scientific and Technological Community Major Group (STC MG), International Science Council and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), and of course many countries, including 178 that committed to Agenda 21 in 1992. 

The people involved are from all walks of life, from rural farmers to CEO's of multinational corporations. Truly a universal issue.

A very simplified answer would be that it is the avoidance of the depletion of the natural resources on earth, in order to maintain an ecological balance. A great overarching example of this comes from "The Future We Want" UN Document that outlined the goals of its efforts. In Goal # 13 it states "We recognize that opportunities for people to influence their lives and future, participate in decision-making and voice their concerns are fundamental for sustainable development. We underscore that sustainable development requires concrete and urgent action. The when started happening over 150 years ago when the industrial revolution began effecting the ozone layer in our atmosphere. This has led to increased temperatures over the past century and half, which have rapidly accelerated over the last 30 years. The evidence from NASA and nearly all climate scientists is very clear: we have to change now or things will only accelerate faster.
o   The planets average surface temperature has risen about 2.12 degrees since the late 19th century, which has been driven by carbon dioxide emissions and other human activities. 
o   The majority of the warming has occurred over the past 40 years, with the last 7 years being the warmest. The years 2016 and 2020 are on record for being the warmest years. 
o   The ocean has absorbed a large amount of the increased heat, which shows that the top 328 feet are warming at .6 degrees since the year 1969. The majority (90%) of the extra energy that earth stores is stored inside the ocean

There's a tremendous amount of reasons as why we should work towards sustainable development and renewable energy. Some of the most well defined that I've come across was developed by the United Nation's Department of Economic and Social Affairs. They've identified 17 primary goals, which encompass the majority of the issues wrapped up into the climate change issues. Some of these include: 

Goal 1: End Poverty in all its forms everywhere
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

There's literally a million different ways we can do this and make positive improvements, no matter how small they may be, what's important is that we are aware and make conscious choices moving forward from this day on. Some of these things we can work on that NASA has recommended: 

o   Increasing energy efficiency
o   Increase the use of renewable energies
o   Conserve and protect water resources
o   Eliminate waste and increase recycling
o   Design, construct, maintain and operate high performance sustainable buildings

The UN's 17 goals are also a wonderful place to look for ideas as to how we can change. Within those goals are specific targets and indicators that will help us show how we are doing, such as: 

Target 12.1
Implement the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production, all countries taking action, with developed countries taking the lead, taking into account the development and capabilities of developing countries

12.1.1 Indicators
Number of countries with sustainable consumption and production (SCP) national action plans or SCP mainstreamed as a priority or a target into national policies

Target 12.2
By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources

Indicators 12.2.1
Material footprint, material footprint per capita, and material footprint per GDP

Indicators 12.2.2
Domestic material consumption, domestic material consumption per capita, and domestic material consumption per GDP
