Modern Pentecostalism began on January 1, 1901, when Agnes Ozman, a student at Charles F. Parham's Bethel Bible School in Topeka, Kansas, spoke in tongues (actually, the story is that she spoke in "Chinese", and did not speak English again for several days).

A few years later, in 1906, the Pentecostal experience of “speaking in tongues” burst on the scene during a revival in an African-American Baptist church on Azuza Street in Los Angeles, Calif. Following these beginnings, Pentecostal preachers and churches spread rapidly, coalescing into various denominations and factions.

Pentecostals recognize two types of baptism: baptism in water and baptism in the Holy Spirit. Pentecostals believe that baptism in the Holy Spirit is not related to any ritual. Rather, it is an experience believers receive in which the Holy Spirit fills them to overflowing and they begin to speak in unlearned languages as the Holy Spirit enables them.

Baby Dedication (Christening) (infant- 1 year)
Pentecostal Christians follow the practice of "christening" their babies between the ages of infancy to 1 year. Christening is like baptism, however it entails putting the life of the infant under the protection of God, rather than devoting the child's life to God before said child is ready to do so themselves. Baby Christening's are held in a Church by a Pastor or Bishop. During the ceremony, the baby is dressed in a special, long white gown that covers the entire body with a bonnet on the head, regardless of the baby's gender. Sometimes, gowns are kept for future generations to use. Entire families are usually invited to this event, with God Parents for the baby chosen at this time as well. Usually, a special dinner party is held after the ceremony by the parents to mark the special occasion.
