The main religious believe of this Indian tribe is that most natural phenomena was really spirits with powers. These spirits were invisible but could take the form of a human. Shamans could cure spirit induced sickness, and work sorcery. In the winter rituals were preformed to initiate new people with their new spirit guardian. There would be dancing, a feast, gifts would be given to guests, and a canoe or a house would be built for the person. Treatment of illnesses that would be induced by spirits would be cured by medicine that would contain plant or animal parts. When a tribe member died the body would by placed in a decorated wooden box, and the box would be put in the branches of a tree. They did a lot of theater, dancing, and painting with natural substances such as berries and other colored items. Many of the paintings were of supernatural beings and animals. The theatrical costumes that the Kwakiutl danced in were normally were like sea animals or bears and made out the respective animals skin.

The food for the tribe was usually hunted and caught, but the not both men and women hunted. The men were usually the ones who hunted. The fishermen usually caught fish and sea mammals, the Hunters hunted deer and birds. The women collected small things like clams, shellfish, berries, seaweed, and roots. The fishermen used certain tools to catch fish that include harpoons, nets, and wooden fish traps. But the hunters used bows and arrows.
