Research question: How did the Czechoslovakians manage to peacefully overthrow a government in two weeks.

Summary: The velvet revolution was a peaceful protest in Czechoslovakia in 1989. It began with a protest in Prague that was met with violent suppression from the police. This sparked a nationwide outrage with people protesting and going on strike everyday. Two weeks later it led to the communist party losing support and the peaceful transition of power. In the end a leading activist, Vaclav Havel was elected president, changing the government into a democracy.

This book will be extremely helpful for me because of the information and keywords that help me understand the revolutions success. Chapters 4, 6, and 10 will be the most helpful for me when writing my paper. Chapter 4: The pillars of disruption is helpful because in the revolution the people were able to get the support of the prime minister toppling one of the major pillars. Chapter 6 is helpful because of the keywords Disruption, Sacrifice, and escalation. These three things are common for a successful protest and all 3 were used. Finally Chapter 10 will be used since the Velvet Revolution used all the concepts described in chapter 10 to have a peaceful and effective transition.

This is my favorite source for my research essay. This paper dives deeply into the strategies that were used during the revolution. It also gives a good background of the main leader of the revolution Vaclav Havel. They go into a great detail on what the protest did right and how they were able to accomplish their goal. They talked about how certain events set off the revolution and how well the protesters were able to stay organized. They also emphasize on three main factors that made them so successful which are attainable objectives, cooperation with the governemnt, and organization strength within the protesters.

This source will be helpful to me because it is simple and clear. It gives general information on the political history leading up to the event which gives me a clear view of why they are protesting. It also talks about the strategic actions that were implored. This shows me what they were doing and why it was working. It also categorizes what each action they took by the type of strategy. This whole article gives a good description of the actions the protesters took to have success.

This article was written by a historian named Lee Evans. Lee is a historian who had been in prague learning about czech history during the velvet revolution. In this article he is writing about his experiences in Czechoslovakia during the revolution. This is a helpful source because it is a source of someone who had been apart of the revolution.

This website has a video and transcript of an interview with the leader of the revolution Vaclav havel. This is an important source because these are the exact words of the person who was at the front of the whole revolution. He tells about his story and what it was like in the revolution. He talks about what it took and how him and the people felt during the time. This is a great source because it gives me personal accounts of the most important man of the revolution to support my essay.

Prague, 1977: Charter 77

This is a article about a an appeal to the Czech government called Charter 77. In 1977 before the velvet revolution the appeal Charter 77 was created by 244 signatories to demand "nothing but the rule of existing law in a Communist state." The charter was supposed to point to the fact that the government is violating their human rights. The reason this is important is because it is an important part of the build up to the revolution. It is a pivotal part of the background and reason many people were apart of the velvet revolution. Vaclav Havel also was one of the signatories so it gives a bit of insight to what he was up too before the revolution began.
