Many of us ask students to complete a short questionnaire in Week 1 so that we can get to know our students. Be mindful of the range of gender identities. Do you include an option for "nonbinary" along with male/female? You should. Do you leave this as an optional question? Consider doing so. If you ask about preferred pronouns, do you provide framing language that expresses yours and why you are asking?

Choose a topic—like Coronavirus, elections, health care, and so on—and Allsides provides you with a curated list of news and opinion pieces from publications that are clearly labeled as leaning left, leaning right, and centrist. Click on any of them and you go right to the full original article. This site would be an excellent resource for anyone who teaches history, social studies, or any kind of writing or research where students need to support their ideas with textual evidence. It can also be helpful in introducing concepts like information reliability.

New problems revealed for students registering

Students waitlisted in full classes aren't being told how to get into open sections. Many students, like myself, thought they were registered but were actually only "scheduled." There's a less than intuitive step to complete registration. Then, when those students realize they aren't in the class, they are told to contact the instructor to see if they can be added instead of being assisted to enroll into an open class.

Concern about current COVID19 policy

I'm worried about the reaction based policy for sick students. The default seems to still be putting a maximum number of students into classrooms, relying on us to fill out a change of classroom form. This means packed classes on first days. It's all up to us to enforce mask wearing, improper mask wearing is thus only addressed after exposure in class. There must be a safer, more proactive policy to PREVENT spread. Please.

Missing Grades

I'm embarrassed to be one of the instructors who had missing grades. I try to be very careful and thorough in submitting grades ahead of deadlines. I check, and double check, and enter directly into Self Service to avoid the glitches with the Blackboard to Self Service problems. Two semesters in a row, I've found the missing grades are due to differences in my Blackboard/Self-Service rosters. In other words, students who were NOT on one or both of those rosters appear AFTER I've submitted and double checked the final grades. Then I get a notification that I have missing grades. So to solve the problem I have to run through all 7 sections, looking for the missing grades, two semesters in a row it turns out it was one student, so that was hard to find. There's got to be a better way!
