Innocent people were accused of being a witch or a warlock and sometimes they were hung but other times they tested this accusation by having you strapped to a chair over "pure" water and if you sunk you weren't considered a witch and if you floated you were. Puritans were the start of the whole event because they believed in a strict moral code and anyone who would go against these codes were considered to have "sin".
