manuela orrego “It has become our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk”. I chose this quote because just as Amy, my dad and I use “broken english” too, and that’s one of the ways we communicate. In a way is fun to have our way of speaking english because it belongs only to us.

manuela orrego I think that when Amy says “the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and in restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her”, is something that i can relate with her because many times neither me or my dad were given the respect or services that we deserved. Only because of the “broken English” we spoke.

I would answer this question by saying that "stranger in a strange land" means a new experience full of difficulties and it could also be an experience of positive things depending on the type of people. In a positive aspect for a person is when the person likes to travel, new experiences and new nationalities it would be a beautiful experience, while on the one hand it is difficult in the language part since writing, pronunciation is somewhat difficult.

My favorite line was, “I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions of the limited-English speaker.” (3ʳᵈ paragraph, 6-8)

I find this quote interesting because it shows how people categorize English learners as something limited. But in reality, English learners are improving day by day and trying their best to communicate their thoughts better in a foreigner language. Also, people who categorize English learners as “limited English '' aren't better than anyone, these learners will be able to speak two different languages and feel better about themselves.

NYC is full of people who migrated here with possibly little to no knowledge about the english language and American culture. It is unfair to say that the people who are learning and
assimilating little by little, are speaking a damaged version of the language.

I don't think there is really a part in the essay that stands out to me with a similar experience to Amy's, however, there are moments where I feel I can connect to things her mother experienced. One particular quote I can connect to is, "And I had plenty of empirical evidence to support me: the fact that people in department " stores, at banks, and in restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was a teenager, she used to have me call people on the phone and pretend I was she." I have experienced something very similar to this, where I felt less than someone else due to my limited knowledge of English. I gelt like this limited ability to speak well also put a limitation on my ability to express myself in many, if not all situations.
