I find that educators need professional develop their craft, no matter how many years have been helping kids. School districts have to do a better job at training educators to ensure that they are culturally competent. I have found that teachers do more harm than good in the classroom, even if it is not their intention.

His name was Ruger and he was an almost 11-year old Boxer/Pitbull mix. He was the sweetest dog and loved belly rubs! He also loved hogging the bed! Unfortunately, he passed away in July 2020 due to a brain tumor. I taught at a charter school for two year before transitioning to the School District of Philadelphia.

At Philadelphia Military Academy, I held multiple positions and was essentially the Assistant Principal, without the title. I also worked as a Professional Learning Specialist to an Assistant Superintendent in the School District of Philadelphia. The goal was to increase instruction in our seven schools. When I was in a low point in my life, I found this church and it has been life changing. I was able to learn to forgive and love myself, become a better person, and grow in my faith. I am involved in life groups, volunteer for Epic Kids, and meet new people. I love walking into church and being greeted my everyone. We are focusing on bringing racial equity to the forefront of our district. There are multiple equity teams in place (district, building, teacher level) with the goal of ensuring that all of students are treated equitably. He is the sweetest, kindest, most energetic boy. He loves Paw Patrol, Blaze and Monster Machines, adding rocks to his rock collection, painting, swimming, riding his bike, and jumping in muddy puddles.

Raising a Black son in America is heartbreaking. We will have conversations that other parents don't have to think about. At some point, I have to take his innocence away to teach him the hard lessons of how he is viewed in this country.
