Appeasement was the right decision for Europe at the time. The continent was still damaged and broken from the first world war and many people would not have supported the war if it was not wholly necessary as it became clear that it was later that year (The Earl of Halifax, The Fulness of Days, 1957). Even if England did go to war, they were not at all ready for a war at that time, which Chamberlain should probably had attended before leaving for the conference.

I do not think that appeasement was the right choice for Britain to make. The League of Nations were given many warnings and signals by Hitler that he was going to try and seize land and countries, yet they completely disregarded them and made a bad decision. Winston Churchill stated that Hitler was "content to have had them served to him on a plate"(Winston Churchill to the House of Commons, October 5, 1938). Hitler is taking land that is not his and instead of being rightfully punished, he is having the land he took become part of Germany.

I believe appeasement was the right decision for Europe. The countries were struggling and weak from WWI, and needed to regain strength in order to be a well maintained country again. Though this meant terrible outcomes for Czechoslovakia, it was worth the benefit of the rest of Europe. The recovery time for Europe by not entering another war helped to form more alliances. From document C, "Hitler would either have climbed down or would have begun war with far less support from his own people than he had a year later. " In 1938, there was no scenario that perfectly benefited all European countries including Czechoslovakia. So, appeasement was the right decision for Europe so that it could benefit most of the countries even if Hitler did not respect Czech's borders. Appeasement meant that countries could regain strength that they lost in WWI.

I think that appeasement was the right decision, so that they would not have to go to war. This would be the best way to handle Hitler and to stay away from war. Even though Hitler was going to betray Czechoslovakia in the future, appeasement was still the right choice.

I do not think that appeasement was the right choice for Britain to make. For starters, the land that they gave to Hitler belonged to the Czechs, who weren't present at the time. I know going to war is not fun, and after the last one they were reluctant to do so again, but drastic times call for drastic measures. There were several warning signs, and they ignored them all. Plus giving, him any land at all will just make him crave more. This is an "if you give a mouse a cookie" situation. "The utmost he [Chamberlain] has been able to gain for Czechoslovakia and in the matters which were in dispute has been that the German dictator, instead of snatching his victuals from the table, has been content to have them served to him course by course" (Winston Churchill). He was able to get what he wanted without wasting any resources and in the end, just pushed forward to achieve his goal anyway. So, no, I don't agree with appeasement at all.

I do not think that appeasement was the best option for Britain in 1938. They were probably consciously aware of what Hitler was capable of, and letting him have even a little bit of land would only encourage him to conquer more. Even though most countries were still feeling the after effects of WWI, that didn't mean that they should just try and avoid the problem to put it off so that hopefully Hitler would give up. In document D, Henry Channon said, "His (the Prime Minister's) whole policy of appeasement is in ruins." In the end, appeasement only had negative effects on everyone, and they should have probably tried to figure something out instead of just attempting to subdue Hitler's intentions.

I think that appeasement was the right decision at the time because no one wanted to get into a War after World War I when it could be avoided. Appeasement gave everyone time to prepare for the war that they dreaded, so it was the right thing to do. "Yet never has he been proved more abundantly right for he gave us six months of peace in which we re-armed, and he was right to try appeasement (Source: Henry Channon, diary entry, March 15, 1939."

I so not think the appeasement was a good decision for Britain to make. In document C, Vernon Bartlett says this, "had Chamberlain stood firm at Godesberg, Hitler would either have climbed down or would have begun war with far less support from his own people than he had a year later." By giving in to Hitler even a little bit it fed into his obsession for gaining land. Countries should have been aware that at this point Hitler was not going to accept this small part of Czechoslovakia and move on. And by actually giving him the land it gave him the idea that he could keep getting land because they weren't going to do anything about it.

I do not think that appeasement was the best option for Europe during 1938. After WWI Europe was over Europe was not strong and they were left with no other option. In document E it says, When all has been said, one fact remains dominant and unchallengeable. When war did come a year later [in 1939] it found a country and Commonwealth (the United Kingdom) wholly united within itself," Though they felt that they needed to do something for their country, by giving into Hitler this allowed him to grow stronger and more powerful. They should have understood that he wouldn't accept just a small part of Czechoslovakia. They should have known that he wouldn't stop there and that this would be the beginning of him growing more and more powerful

I do not believe that appeasement was the right choice for England during 1938. Document A states, “Chamberlain defends the agreement in front of the United Kingdom’s House of Commons.” This means that Chamberlain made his speech in the United Kingdom. Chamberlain’s main goal for the Munich agreement was to, “seek by all means in our power to avoid war by, analyzing possible causes, trying to remove them, by discussion in a spirit of collaboration and goodwill.” People in England might have been more compelled to support appeasement so that they could avoid another terrible war. Chamberlain thought that with appeasement, war could be avoided and no one would get killed. However, this was not the case. Hitler took advantage of England and Frances appeasement by take over more territory than he was supposed to. Winston Churchill predicted that appeasement would not end well for England. Churchill gave a speech at the House of Commons in the United Kingdom. He stated, “ We have stated a total defeat.” He always says, when talking about Hitler, “instead of snatching his victuals from the table, has been content to have them served to him course by course”
