Unrestricted Submarine Warfare Feb 1, 1917

The cause of this event was the Germans announcing to resume unrestricted submarine warfare. This event was significant because it pushed the U.S to join the war. They ended up joining the war because it affected them economically, the Germans had previously suspended it in response to the US pressuring them. This was one of the turning points in the war, as the U.S joined the war, it ended fairly quickly. I think that the US joining the war, was a fair and the right thing to do because they had an agreement and they just broke it.

The selective service was also a really important turning point in the war. It ended up being a successful act as 24 million men had signed up. The act was put in place because the US army was not fit enough for the war so they needed to have a more powerful army with way more bodies. I think this was one of the better decisions made in the US it made allowed for them to be a staple in combat.

This was another turning point in the war because the US had just joined the war with all of their troops while the other countries had been fighting for 1/2 years. The US had sent 4 million troops which outnumbered Germany's depleted army. The consequence of this was really good, the US ended up winning the war by a good margin.

The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919 at the Palace of Versailles in Paris at the end of WW1, codified peace terms between Germany and the victorious Allies. The Treaty of Versailles held Germany responsible for starting the war and imposed harsh penalties on the Germans, including loss of territory, massive reparations payments and demilitarization. Far from the “peace without victory” that U.S. President Woodrow Wilson had outlined in his famous 14 points in early 1918, the Treaty of Versailles humiliated Germany while failing to resolve the underlying issues that had led to war in the first place.

During the war the federal food administration started to take measures to find a way to conserve food for the war. The motive was to have the soldiers well fed for their battle in Europe. This event ending up helping the US win the war because without the food administration doing this some of the soldiers would have starved. In my opinion I do agree with the idea, but just not the part where they were forcing people to eat certain foods.

When the war began, the US economy was in recession. But a 44-month economic boom ensued from 1914 to 1918, first as Europeans began purchasing US goods for the war and later as the United States itself joined the battle. The long period of US neutrality made the ultimate conversion of the economy to a wartime basis easier than it otherwise would have been, writes Rockoff. Real plant and equipment were added, and because they were added in response to demands from other countries already at war, they were added precisely in those sectors where they would be needed once the U.S. entered the war.

During WW1, the United States government issued Liberty Bonds, which were used to aid in the expensive costs of war. The issuance of the Liberty Bonds was coupled with a strong investment in propaganda to appeal to American’s patriotism. However, most of the bond purchases were done by banks and other financial institutions that saw them as appealing investment opportunities. The cause of this was because during WW1, war bonds were made available to retail investors, as well as wholesale investors, with the purpose of raising enough capital to finance the governments’ increased military expenditures.

Ration cards were issued and everyone had to register with a local butcher and grocer. The first item to be rationed was sugar in January 1918, but by the end of April meat, butter, cheese and margarine were added to the list. Some foods were still in short supply even after the war ended, for instance butter remained on ration until 1920. The cause of this event was a food shortage and so they had to make a move quickly.

In the speech, Wilson directly addressed what he perceived as the causes for the world war by calling for the abolition of secret treaties, a reduction in armaments, an adjustment in colonial claims in the interests of both native peoples and colonists, and freedom of the seas. Wilson also made proposals that would ensure world peace in the future. For example, he proposed the removal of economic barriers between nations, the promise of self-determination for oppressed minorities, and a world organization that would provide a system of collective security for all nations.
