Furthermore, I have learnt about the advantages and disadvantages that artificial selection can hold. It can be good for producing traits faster and enhancing the quality of what is being changed. On the other hand, they can have risks and there can still be disadvantages to organisms by altering a specific trait.

Artificial selection is the process in which two organisms with desirable traits are breed together to produce an offspring with similar traits. Humans have manipulated this ability to create breeds and animals with certain traits so that they could benefit from it. For example, farmers which modify the structure of an animal such as a cow, completely change its natural figure and create such muscular creatures, just to be able to sell larger quantities of muscle mass in a shorter time. On the bright side, information we have gathered from experimenting and modifying organism genetically has expanded our knowledge on how gene functions operate. These advancements have allowed us to create technologies that are very meticulous and have surpassed previous ways humans influence inheritance of traits.

I have learnt about a couple of interesting topics. I learnt about artificial selection, which was about the offsprings that were created in a way that the humans wanted it to be. The humans made two desirable animals, with the same benefitial traits, to create an offspring in order for it to come out with those specific traits. Then I learnt about natural selection, which was about animals surviving an area with the help of their traits. In another case, it is also about two animals reproducing with no human interference. After learning a bit of those topics, I learned about gene therapy, which seemed really cool because it was the process of where scients/doctors would inject genes into someone's cells to fight off diseases or disorders the person has.

Humans influence the inheritance of traits in thousands of living organisms through the process of selective breeding, and, after the recent development of the technology, genetic engineering as well. Selective breeding, or artificial selection, allows humans to breed specific organisms so that the offspring have traits which are beneficial to humans. Genetic engineering allows humans to alter the genes of an organism (i.e. through inserting a specific gene of another organism), in a way such that the new genetic code of the organism develops traits beneficial to humans. Despite the fact that the processes are different, they both meet the same purpose of artificially influencing the traits of an organism. An example of a living organism which humans have modified is the dog; the species of dog has been modified in several ways to create different breeds of dog (eg. bulldogs, and collies), creating a variety of pets for humans to keep. The impact of modifying organisms is both positive and negative, for both animals and humans. As the idea of modifying organisms becomes more advanced, scientists are starting to come up with new technologies, such as the CRISPR CAS9, which allow humans to influence the traits of living organisms in more efficient, and more beneficial manner; such technologies are also opening doors for research about genetically modifying humans. One of the many positive impacts of the developments of such new technologies is that the fields of artificial selection and genetic engineering are being able to spread to benefit other industries such as healthcare; for example, scientists can use new genetic engineering technologies for things like gene therapy, to provide highly sophisticated medical care to humans. It can be seen that as scientists understand how traits are passed down, and how traits affect an organism, scientists can use new technologies to alter living organisms in ways which benefit humans in ways never thought possible before.

While working on this assignment, I have learned that artificial selection is a form of genetic engineering where humans extract desired characteristics from plants and animals to breed together. It is a process that farmers have been using for over 10,000 years. Artificial selection in agriculture is mainly used for:

Increased production of animal meat and milk.

Crops and food resistant to illnesses, diseases, and insects.

Even though artificial selection may have several benefits to the plants and animals, it may result in some negative factors such as soil conditions, increased susceptibility to disease, etc. as the plants begin to evolve and reproduce. Also, as the offspring begin to inherit similar, if not identical, genetic information to their parents and other organisms in their population, the gene pool begins to decrease. From this, harmful mutations in the organisms can occur.
Several gene-modifying technological devices and advancements have arose from the several scientific studies humans have made over the past decade. Techniques such as CRISPR Cas9 and TALEN allow humans to experiment and alter the functions and traits of organisms and humans, whether that be through replacing the letters in a DNA sequence or inserting new ones. It has, and will continue to, create a fascinating world of science and knowledge, with a completely different definition to existence.

Artificial Selection is when two organisms of particular traits breed together to make an offspring with their similar traits, but humans are involved in the process. In other words, it's unnatural breeding. This breeding is used with domestic animals or plants such as dogs, corn, cows, tomatoes, pigs, etc. Many people have encouraged inheritance of traits, mostly for personal benefit. This action changing animal traits will impact our world massively. Scientists will have found ways to have genetically modified many things we do daily. Like eating. We will soon have muscular cows on our plates, and we will not even know it. This discovery will surely change the world.

Throughout this research I learned a lot more on natural selection, artificial selection and how technology allows humans to influence inheritance of traits. Although artificial and natural selection may seem pretty similar, they each contain various key differences. During natural selection, nature is in control, however in order for there to be natural selection, there must be a variation in the population meaning different traits within the specie and some traits must be more advantageous than others so individuals that adapt to the environment better than those who don’t, will survive and reproduce to increase in population. On the other hand, during artificial selection, humans are able to change species by breeding it for certain traits and humans can be known as selective agents. In addition, I have learned that such technologies like CRISPR, gene therapy and cloning can influence the traits in organisms; CRISPR and gene therapy help treat and prevent any harmful diseases or disorders while cloning makes desired traits to pass on. All in all, artificial and natural selection are really the same process but one is driven by man and advanced technologies while the other is driven by an organism's traits that allow them to survive and reproduce.

I learnt about the difference between natural selection and artificial selection, and genetic engineering. Artificial selection is done by humans, instead of nature. In Artificial selection, animals/plants with benefits to humans are bred, and animals that are useless to humans die out. One main downside to artificial selection would be that organisms that have be artificially selected may not be able to live in the wild anymore due to the genetic change. I also learnt about genetic engineering. Genetic engineering allows human to change the genetic material in an organism. This can lead to the organism developing new traits, that would be beneficial to humans. In addition, genetic engineering can also be used when treating certain diseases. If successful, in the future humans may use genetic engineering to treat diseases instead of drugs.

I have learned that artificial selection is the process in which humans breed plants and animals to create more desirable characteristics for organisms. Humans are in total control of this process as they are the ones who create needed traits within organisms for their benefit. There are many advantages to the process of artificial selection. For instance, farmers are able to produce crops in larger quantities, which eventually enhances their profitability. Artificial selection also allows more muscle tissues to grow within animals for consumption. Despite the benefits mentioned, there are a few drawbacks to this process. At times there will be consequences for trying to get a needed trait. Factors that are needed to achieve a desired trait of a certain organism, can have a negative impact on it. Moreover, artificial selection reduces variation amongst a population. When there is less variation amongst a population, then there is more chance of harmful mutations occuring. I have also learned that technologies such as CRISPR will have a major impact on the future as it will be able to change the way traits are inherited.
