Deindividuation:

Deindividuation is when people engage in acts that normally would be seen as deviant and violent and feel they will not be held accountable as they are in a large group, this is seen in the Jonestown massacre as the people who were part of the church we brainwashed into doing things they wouldn’t normally do. Such as signing over all the personal belongings and families joining the church would be kept apart from each other. This further showing a loss of self-thought and awareness as people were losing who they were before joining the church.

Conformity and Obedience:

The group pressure and large group size indicate factors of conformity, this is prominently seen when members were ordered to hunt down and kill congress man Leo Ryan, once he and 10 others were shot and killed the members were then ordered to commit suicide along with the other members in the town. All members did as told and over 900 people died because of it. The actions show signs of conformity and obedience as members went along with what Jones said and killed themselves, their families and random people, with only an order from one man guiding their actions, the level of obedience is very high here and because of the authority figure the people did as told.

Group think and Social facilitation:

The Jonestown group had a strong, persuasive leader that drove the group think and forced

The group to think as one under his control. This was seen when in 1977 after people began to question him and his methods he moved several hundred people away from their homes to the Jonestown compound and there they lived under his control until the mass suicide in 1978. When given the call in 1978 to take down U.S congressman Leo Ryan several members of the cult launched an attack on him and members of the press by shooting them, after the attack on Leo, Jones released radio orders for temple members outside of the compound to commit suicide and shortly after the suicide plan inside the temple started and members were prepared for this as they had practice in the past on how to enact this. This is a representation of social facilitation as they had a leader overlooking them and therefore their actions may be skewed one way or another, the authority figure of Jones forces people to act in a way that he sees as suitable.

Aggression:

In the Jonestown massacre Jones was prone to using instrumental aggression to achieve what he wants; instrumental aggression is more cognitive and is focused around hurting someone to get what you want like political power in the case of Jones. He would initiate his followers by turning them against the outside world so it was the church verses the rest of the world, to get people to stay in the compound he would exaggerate events and lie to people saying that their homeland was facing marital law, concentration camps and nuclear war, when people became trapped in the compound there was nowhere to leave and built up even more paranoia by stating they were in constant danger. Congressman Leo Ryan only went to investigate because he had claims of abuse and people were being held prisoner, when the massacre was over a hidden supply of firearms along with passports and $500,000. From this evidence found there was potential for physical aggression to take place.
