Open your course of study document, and take a moment read further about the recurring standards on page 9-10. Think about why these recurring standards should be included in each grade level. Choose one or two of the standards that you deem to be of great significance and add your ideas to our collaborative board. Explain why you think the standard is important at all grade levels. Feel free to like and make comments on the thoughts of other participants. PLEASE REMEMBER TO INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS ON YOUR RESPONSE SO THAT WE CAN RECORD YOUR PARTICIPATION.

In our digital society, it is never too early to begin teaching children how to use the internet in a safe and responsible manner. And just as it is in many areas, repetition is key. They may get tired of hearing us say it, but we must teach them how to protect themselves and their personal information, as well as how to respond and treat others on social media.

One of the skills that is taught with technology is independence. Students have greater freedoms to use different materials without lack of resources (pictures, quotes, etc.). However, teaching students how to use the technology systems so they are dependent on the teacher is an important skill that is often overlooked. My 5th graders repeatedly raise their hands to tell me the program has stopped responding or that they deleted a text box. It takes great patience to show them how to fix their problems, but well worth it.

In this digital world, it is paramount that students are taught the very basics of internet safety, security and privacy at a young age. They need to be made aware, without frightening them, that dangers do exist and that our job as a parent, teacher, or other trusted adult is to protect them and teach them how to access and use resources responsibly. Because technology is constantly involving and because student's daily lives increasingly are built around technology, it is important to continue to teach and review the concepts of safety, security and privacy.

I work with 5th graders. Many of these kids are getting their first phones during their time with me. Safety and security is a big concern as they navigate apps that their parents do not monitor, or consider to be detrimental. If kids don't understand the dangers early, they will continue to make dumb decisions until it is possibly too late.

This is a major concern in Middle School. Each classroom has a set of chrome books for students to use. Students attempt to chat with each other in a inappropriate manner which is detrimental to the learning of others, thus causing the teacher to remove communications between students. However, just as we can create a google classroom so can the students. I had a few students who created teacher accounts and invited their classmates to join. Then while in class rather than focusing on classwork chats between students were occurring. As a former Huntsville City School Teacher, this battle has been occurring ever since we have implemented one on one learning. Therefore, ethical digital learning is so important. My current school system (Hale County) is not one on one. However, we still have the same concerns. Young students are watching tiktok videos, looking up images of weapons, confederate flags, or the latest shoes. It is vital we teach students to be safe, legal, and ethical especially in the digital learning environment.

Technology plays such a big role in the 21st century that students need to know how to be safe and responsible while online. If not, real world problems can occur that could put their safety at risk. This is important across all grade levels because one only needs to be in any public setting a minimal length of time to see toddlers playing games on their parents' devices or on their own. Hopefully parental controls are on but as students grow older those controls are lessen leading to an unaware student being open to all kinds of safety concerns.
kdndru@gmail.com

Sometimes it is easy for students (all of us) to say or do things online that would never be said or done in person. It is important that students understand that they can and mostly likely will be held accountable if what they say or do online causes damage to a person or business, etc... This information should be taught to all grade levels because of the damage it can do to a student who acts irresponsible and also to protect the student/person/business etc to which in may happen. We see in-person bullying or disrespectful behavior in people of all age levels. That feeling of being invisible behind a username may make some think they can't be caught. If they understand how they can be tracked and the legalities of certain behaviors online hopefully it will be a deterrent and save everyone legal problems.
kdndru@gmail.com
