<title>What is the recommended way to assess LE proprioception? Is comparing balance on and off compliant surfaces sufficient?</title>

<title>I will try to address this in our group discussion but I am including a lengthier answer here. Feel free to reach out if you want to discuss further. What we teach the NUPT students about assessment of proprioception is to assess in the UE and LE. We teach them to use the Thumb Localization Test for the UE (I know your question was about the LE but if you want more info about this, shoot me an email and we can talk). IN the LE, we tell them they can choose either testing by matching (comparing to the un/less involved limb) of asking for a description of the movement (up/down/in/out, etc.). Evidence supports the fact that there is no sig difference in proprioceptive involvement distal compared to proximal in the limbs post stroke, so we suggest picking a distal going with ample PROM to assess and only checking other joints if there is a good reason to suspect additional loss (e.g prior knee surgery). We recommend 6 trials - this is supported by literature. Your suggestion of having a patient on a compliant surface is a good example of a functional test, but I don&#39;t think it will allow you to tease out motor/sensory (including touch/pressure sensation) loss from proprioception. It&#39;s a worthwhile discussion as to whether that matters, but in terms of targeting intervention, it may. j-sullivan@northwestern.edu</title>

<title>not to my knowledge. I have seen NMES used effectively to increase activation of the trunk on the impaired side and increase trunk symmetry/better weight shifting. JS</title>
