An international campaign to free Mandela began. Countries boycotted South Africa: they stopped trade and they refused to send sport teams or entertainers there. Finally in 1990, South Africa got a new president called F.W. de Klerk. He freed Mandela after 28 years in prison. The two men worked together to create a multiracial democracy for South Africa and in 1993, they won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work.
