More specifically, how a backlash against the injustices of capitalist society helped spark the proliferation of communitarian experiments in the mid and late nineteenth century. When I used to research this stuff, I came across a number of letters written by people who were hoping to join a communitarian experiment either because they were injured, of retirement age, or their business had failed and they had no way to recover. In hindsight, neurodivergence and the resulting inability to fully fit into nineteenth-century American society was likely another reason for interest in these communities. In one letter from October 1904 that I found in Special Collections at the Syracuse Library, a man proposed the creation of an "Altruistic, Co-operative, Industrial Sanitarium." He claimed he was motivated to launch such an establishment because "my eyes are failing and my children are grown up."
