What are Additional Learning Needs?

A child or young person with Additional Learning Needs, ALN, is an individual with significantly greater difficulty in learning compared with the majority of others the same age. (Snap Cymru , 2022)

A child might have ALN that derives from a health condition which results in them needed additional learning provision, ALP.

A child is not described as having ALN if their challenges with learning can be overcome through differentiated teaching styles or other forms of learning provision that is available for others of the same age.

The timeline begins with a recognition of Additional Learning Needs in a child or young person.

The first step in the ALN process is recognising that a child or young person requires additional support to overcome challenges in their learning and progress through the curriculum.

Arranging a person centered practice meeting.

The setting will designate a co-ordinator and agree a date for the PCP meeting to take place. An invite letter is sent out to all staff and external agencies involved with the child’s care to seek their views and advice. This is all documented appropriately in line with the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018 legislation.

Information is shared among all relevant parties.

All information gathered is shared prior to the person centered practice meeting with all relevant persons attending the meeting.

Week 4

Person centered practice meeting takes place.

The setting carries out the person centered practice meeting. it is essential that the person with parental responsibilities for the child or young person is at this meeting. During this meeting parents, carer's and the child or young person will ascertain their requirements for the meeting. In this meeting a decision is reached as to whether the child or young person has Additional Learning Needs and requires Additional Learning Provision.

Additional Learning Provision

If the child or young person is found to have ALN then the setting will write an Individual Development Plan outlining the support in place for the child to ensure they have equitable access to the curriculum. The IDP will be created using the person centered practice meeting presentation and notes. If the decision reached is that the child or young person doesn't require ALP then the setting will discuss this with the parents. The decision of No ALN does not mean that the child or young person will not receive support but that with reasonable adjustments and universal provision the child has equitable access to the curriculum.

Week 5

The initial IDP is shared with relevant parties.

The setting will share the draft IDP will the relevant parties involved in the child or young person's care.

Two weeks are given for those involved to pass comment and make reasonable adjustments to the initial IDP.

Annual reviews.

The IDP and Additional Learning Provision will be reviewed annually. Any parties involved are able to call an early review meeting if they think it is necessary.
