Vibe Coding for Teaching and Learning

Let's talk about vibe coding! Vibe coding is a way to build computer programs by chatting with a large language model rather than writing the code yourself. Think less “write code first,” and more “describe the teaching tool you wish existed.”

For example, you can vibe code a program that creates flashcards for review or quizzing so your students can learn important concepts from your course. Check out this flashcard maker with quiz component!

For best results and to protect confidential information, remember to verify all output and avoid inputting sensitive data when using third-party AI platforms and tools.

Remember vibe coding? It's when you use plain language to describe and build software. You guide the vision; AI writes the code.

When vibe coding, remember the three ground rules:

You are in control. You guide the AI and you're responsible for what it creates.

Forefront privacy, ethics, and safety when creating, testing, and especially when deploying your app.

Keep your API key safe.

Curious what you could vibe code? Check out the digital version of the AI display that’s currently on the first floor of our library!

Prevent accidental data exposure by regularly auditing your course files or general files. Did you know that you can use the search filters within Google Drive to quickly find every file currently set to "Anyone with the link"?

When sharing within Stanford or with specific people, you can also control a file or folder's permission level. After selecting an option like "Restricted" or "Stanford University," use the dropdown menu to the right to choose whether people are a Viewer (can only view), a Commenter (can view and add comments), or an Editor (can make changes). Learn more about how to share Google files securely.

To audit your Google files and folders:

Open Google Drive and click the Home tab.

Click the People filter chip at the top of the page.

Select Anyone with the link from the dropdown menu.

Google Drive will display a list of files and folders with this sharing setting enabled.
