Thoughts on Remixed Music

For me, I can start by saying that I really enjoy the idea of taking a song and remixing it. As shown in Rip! A Remix Manifesto, some people believe that remixes aren't creative and are unoriginal, but I disagree. It is true that some remixes are honestly so bad and should just be left alone because the original was just fine, however there are several better things that come out of remixes. The reason why is that the remixes inspire more creativity among music lovers and producers because it broadens the realm of music making. When an artist put out an original of a song for his/her fanbase and then another artist remixes it, you then expand and combine two fanbases, hence expanding the music culture that was not there before. There is also the argument that the when a song is remixed that it takes away from the artists credit but I feel it does the opposite. When you remix, especially if the artist that did it is a very popular one, then you actually bring attention to the original piece of music. I believe that to remix a song you have to be very talented and dedicated to do so and I really commend artist that remix some of the original songs that i listen to. For me on a day to day basis I Hip-Hop is heavy is my musical rotation with artist like Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar being my favorite. I listen to almost anything that has their made on it so when they post some remixes of other artists pieces that they remixed it proves my point. A great example is when Travis Scott remixed one of Frank Ocean, a predominantly R&B artist, songs it made me hooked on a new genre of music because of the exposure that Travis brought to the song/artist expanding my musical culture

Here are some of the quotes that I felt explain my reasoning behind my thoughts

1. "Every spoof gives more power to the original" (Shepard Fairey)
2. "In realizing our own identities, we tend foreground aspects that are regarded as important by the people around us." (Turino, 102)
3. "Many artists remix their own songs, and DJs often remix the songs of other musicians." (Avid Listener)

I did not know about this song that Frank Ocean put out until Travis Scott posted his remixed version on his social media. This remix I feel brings life to the song in that people like me that only knew about Travis Scott and his music were now exposed to a different genre of music as well as a whole new artist. In final this proves that remixes do not discredit the original version but however bring light to it.

Here is another remix to a song that I feel proves that remixes add more creativity to the musical culture. The song is a original version by the Migos put when young thug added his verses to the song it, I feel it completely changed the dynamic of the song, actually making me enjoy the remix more than the original which was a first.

When I saw that he had a few songs with Lana Del Rey it was I interested to see out he would fit his sound with hers and from the songs that they put out, it worked out perfectly.
