This book explores a journey of resilience with powerful messages throughout. When Meixing’s dream world within her magical greenhouse collapses, she discovers friends who can help which shows her the power of friendship.   

Year 6 - The second person narrative voice will consolidate their knowledge of past, present and future tense writing.

By using this book in a whole class read aloud situation, the teacher is able to identify the understanding of the story but also vocabulary that each child has grasped.

Book Talk:

1. Consider the use of colours in the book. Why does the character choose to draw in blue pencil? What feelings can you infer from these colours?

2. Use a thesaurus to explore synonyms of words that are unfamiliar.

From the perspective of the bully, The Night Bus Hero is a thought provoking read about the power of kindness and respect. The reader comes along for the ride as Hector races to bring about justice and change his thinking.   
 
Year 4 – The themes within this book allows reading for a range of purposes which is outlined within the National Curriculum. 
 
Due to the sensitive topics that this book includes, I believe it would be best practice to use this in guided reading sessions.  
 
Book Talk: 

1. Discuss Hector’s views throughout an extract at the beginning of the book. What language conveys these views?

2. After Hector is introduced, ask the children what bullying is. How might bullying make someone feel? These discussions generate vocabulary development.  

3. Within groups, the children should compose a poem or playscript about a character's development of feelings. They can then present these to their classmates.

Year 5 – The National Curriculum claims that children should be familiar with and traditional stories from other cultures.

This book would be best used to meet learning objectives as children learn to infer characters feelings and thoughts. 

Book Talk: 
 
1. Providing an image of the front cover. Ask the class to predict what the story may be about? What feelings does the front cover induce?  
2. Have the children think about what their legacy would be, if they found themselves at the gate, and what they would tell Baba Yaga about their life. 
3. Ask the children to imagine they lived in the house with chicken legs. To develop their creative and descriptive writing skills, have them write a letter to a friend explaining their feelings.

Year 1 -  Children become familiar with letters and their format. Also recalling characters from different story books.

This book can be used for literacy objectives due to the focus on letters and letter writing.

Book Talk:

1. Make a list of words to describe one of the characters.

2. Write some instructions, as a class, on how to write a letter.

3.  Discuss the differences between a formal and informal letter. Identify them within the book.

Year 2 - Begin to learn the meaning behind characters actions and can discuss characters thoughts and feelings.


This book can be used to meet learning objectives, there can be discussion about the repetition and use of characters to invoke feelings.

Book Talk:

1. Look at the front cover. Predict what might happen to Claire on her way home.

2. Discuss the characters, can you think of adjectives to describe each character? Are any of them alliteration?

Year 1 - There is a lot of repetition and sequencing, children can relate to the games that Molly plays throughout.

This would work best for class reading time, as it allows for open discussions where the children can predict who has been tidying up.

1. What games did Molly play on each day of the week? Make a list as a class.

2. Discuss who tidy's up at school or at home. Is there an Octopus?

3. What other animal might be good at cleaning up?
