The ultimate test, sacrifice or possible whole team loss, Odysseus has an impossible choice. One thing he did not expect was six of his men willing to take the hit for the team, even if it meant certain death. This monster Scylla is the pushing force through this theme, making men sacrifice themselves willingly or take a risk and be selfish. The creature which Homer describes in the Odyssey had twelve dangling feet with six heads to complement the many limbs. The heads atop these long necks were grisly with a triple row of sharp teeth. Her voice was associated with the screaming of hounds. Rumor has it that her name came from the Greek words for “hermit crab” (Skyllaros), and “dog” or “dog shark” (Skylax). In the website we researched, in classical art she was depicted as, “fish-tailed sea-goddess with a cluster of canine fore-parts surrounding her waist” (Theoi)
