Experienced navigators such as the Polynesians notice the different patterns of the land swell. Land swells reflect / bounce-back waves as it takes shape. As the wave hits an island it shall bounce back as it can be seen 50 kilometres away from small islands and up to 300 kilometres from larger lands.

As the sky is covered with clouds the navigator would keep up or maintain course of the direction the swell and wind goes. Strong winds will keep pushing the swell for a long extended time and so the navigator would keep the same angle on the swell. Navigators had a tool called the pennants tied to the rigging and mast as a guide. Noticing the wind course was much faster then noticing then swell changing and so the navigators adjust their course.

The shape, movement and colour clouds could be easily detected to signify land is nearby. Clouds over large land were motionless then the clouds over the sea. Forested islands have the clouds coloured dark or green while pinkish clouds indicates a reef.

Yes, The objective was to find new land to settle and was successful with the techniques but it had its doubt. Sailing at night would have the chance of clouds blocking the stars leaving a long period of time till it passes leaving the stars visible to the sailor. Having a storm occuring while travelling would cause extreme disaster to the sailors and the techniques used as it covers the sky with dark clouds for a vast distance, strong winds would wipe out debris and difficult vision of spotting different species of fish. Despite all the possible threats that the Polynesians could of had that still managed to have the job done through experienced navigation and luck.
