Verbal communication is the use of sounds and words to express yourself, especially in contrast to using gestures or mannerisms which is known as non-verbal communication. An example of verbal communication is saying “No” when someone asks you to do something you don't want to do. While non-verbal communication refers to behavior and elements of speech aside from the words themselves that transmit meaning. Non-verbal communication includes pitch, speed, tone and volume of voice, gestures and facial expressions, body posture, stance, and proximity to the listener, eye movements and contact, and dress and appearance.

In hospitality industry, the interaction between service employees and customers, commonly referred to as the service encounter, is a critical part of the service delivery process because its elements greatly impact customers’ evaluations of service consumption experiences. It is commonly known that employees’ display of affective characteristics, such as friendliness, responsiveness, and enthusiasm, positively influences customers’ overall evaluation of service consumption experiences and perceptions of service quality. Further, we are aware that employee's verbal communication during an encounter such as words of greeting and courtesy affect customer perceptions of employee friendliness and consequently enhance the perceived quality of the service interaction. However, what is relatively unclear is the nature of the effect of service employee's actions, such as their nonverbal communication will affect on customers’ perceptions of service employee's characteristics such as their friendliness, competence, and credibility. This lack of clarity is unfortunate because research in the communication field reveals that the nonverbal components are at least as important as the verbal components of interpersonal communication in shaping the outcome of employee‐customer interactions. In fact, nearly half of the variations in response to interpersonal communication can be attributed to nonverbal factors. It is even suggested that nonverbal communication, the form of communicating thoughts and emotions without using words, accounts for nearly 70 percent of all communication.

It is vital that when communicating the message you are sending is understood in the way that it was intended, and that communication is not distorted. If you do not understand a message, it is vital you communicate this with the sender that you do not understand, as future communication cannot be responded to correctly.

Non-verbal communication is an important component of effective communication. Non-verbal communication includes such things as tone of voice, voice quality (nasal, whiny, musical), making eye contact with the person to whom you are talking, paying attention when somebody else talks, body position, distance from the person, and body movement. It is easy to say one thing but to communicate the opposite with your non-verbal communication when the non-verbal part of your communication is in conflict with the verbal message, others tend to trust the non-verbal message.

Verbal communication refers to the use of sounds and language to relay a message. It serves as a vehicle for expressing desires, ideas and concepts and is vital to the processes of learning and teaching. In combination with nonverbal forms of communication, verbal communication acts as the primary tool for expression between two or more people.

Verbal communication has many purposes, but its main function is relaying a message to one or more recipients. It encompasses everything from simple one-syllable sounds to complex discussions and relies on both language and emotion to produce the desired effect. Verbal communication can be used to inform, inquire, argue and discuss topics of all kinds. It is vital to teaching and learning, as well as forming bonds and building relationships with other people.

Although all species communicate, language itself is a purely human phenomenon that allows for more precision than the communication methods of other beings.

Non verbal communication is when we interact with others, we continuously give and receive wordless signals. All of our nonverbal behaviors—the gestures we make, the way we sit, how fast or how loud we talk, how close we stand, how much eye contact we make—send strong messages. These messages don't stop when you stop speaking either. Even when you're silent, you're still communicating nonverbally.

Oftentimes, what comes out of our mouths and what we communicate through our body language are two totally different things. When faced with these mixed signals, the listener has to choose whether to believe your verbal or nonverbal message, and, in most cases, they're going to choose the nonverbal because it's a natural, unconscious language that broadcasts our true feelings and intentions in any given moment.
