"An “evil forest” was, therefore, alive with sinister forces and powers of darkness. It was such a forest that the rulers of Mbanta gave to the missionaries. They did not really want them in their clan, and so they made them that offer which nobody in his right senses would accept" (Achebe 148)
this means that the land they gave the missionarys was believed to be cursed. they gave them this land because they genuinly believed that no one in their right mind would take the cursed land. the village people did this so that the land would force them to leave if they could not do it themselves. but they soon realized that they were wrong and the missionary were not leaving because nothing bad really happened to them.

Obierka goes to Mbanta and tells Okonkwo that his son Nwoye has been converted. Obierka asked Nwoye “How is your father” and than Nwoye said “He is not my father” (Achebe 144). Nwoye rejects his own father because Okonkwo does not believe in Jesus. Okonkwo seems to be ashamed about Nwoyes new belief.“Okonkwo did not wish to speak about Nwoye” (Achebe 144). The two religions colliding causes hostility amongst family members.

The white men had introduced God to the clan telling the people of Umuofia how there was one true God and that they worshiped false Gods. The white men told them that the true God lived on high and all men, when they died would go before him for them to be judged. The white man mentioned that the one true God had a son named “Jesu Kristi” that God conceived without a wife. There was also a quote where the white man says that he was sent by God to ask the people of Umuofia to leave their false Gods and that the people of the clan should turn to him so that they could be saved when they die.

In Chapter 16, Okonkwo sees his son, Nwoye, with some if the Christian missionaries, Nwoye has been converted. The Christian missionaries try to pursuade the village of Mbanta that they have been worshiping false gods and that they should convert and believe in the teachings of their God. The village is very confused about the Holy Trinity and how it is the same as one god. Because of the general confusion of the village, they leave the meetings the missionaries held because they believed that they were ridiculous. Nwoye was very captivated and became even more so when they began to sing evangelical songs, Nwoye called them “the poetry of the new religion”.

“Three converts had gone into the village and boasted openly that all the gods were dead and impotent and that they were prepared to defy them by burning all their shrines” (Achebe 154). The converts are stating that the gods and goddesses that people in Mbanta believe in are nonexistent and the only true god is the one of Christian belief. The converts are also trying to prove that the gods are false by burning their shrines and stating that they won’t receive any punishment BECAUSE their gods are false. They want to prove that their gods are false so that the villagers will convert to Christianity.

After the missionaries build the church in the Evil Forest, Nwoye becomes interested in the new faith. They had converted a few people and whenever they were preaching in the village, Nwoye was nearby, listening. One day, Amikwu, Okonkwo’s cousin, sees Nwoye with the Christians. Amikwu tells Okonkwo and when Nwoye came home, Okonkwo got mad at him and started hitting him. Okonkwo’s wives were excited, but Okonkwo did not accept the new faith.

The clan assumed that because the missionaries built the church on the burial ground everyone assumed that they would all die from the evil spirits but they never did. Nothing happened for a while between the clan and the church for a while. The church was more successful than the clan had hoped and they kept getting more converts . Somebody in the clan kills the most sacred animal and the leaders of the clan are thinking of a punishment. Okonkwo wishes for a violent punishment but they decide to go for a more peaceful punishment.

“Everybody in the assembly spoke, and in the end it was decided to ostracize the Christians. Okonkwo ground his teeth in disgust” (Achebe 159). The villagers want to ostracize the Christians because then they won't be held accountable for their ‘abominations.’ However, Okonkwo wants to do something about the Christians. He wants to do something violent (ex. Maybe kill them or go to war with them). Okonkwo is upset with the converters and is willing to go against this son (maybe possibly kill?) to get rid of the Christians.
