Undergrad: Primary education and coaching minor.

My passion is helping kids love school and feel like they can succeed. I also love sports and all kinds of sports so I also am minoring in coaching so that I can hopefully coach a team and also teach. I plan to teach 2nd or 3rd grade and want to coach cheerleading or track, because those are the sports I did. I started as a Kinesiology major but realized quickly that while I love sports and health what I actually love is kids, so I switched it and now feel so much more passion and excitement to learn and develop skills to follow my goals.

My clubs and orgs: Gymnastics club and coaching.

I am on the Miami gymnastics club team and have had a wonderful time. I have met so many great people while also doing something we all love. I also coach the young gymnast as a job. This works out great for me because I love kids and sports.

Career counseling.

There are so many people in the health, education and wellness office that have been and are so helpful with finding everything I have needed. I went in there to change my major and they all were so helpful and helped me get to exactly where I want to be. I would feel comfortable to reach out to any of them for help!

Internships and shadowing.

So I have to student teach a semester before I graduate, and Miami has so many things to help me get there. I am really excited about this part because teaching is something that I have always wanted to do. I also am excited to learn all about how to make plans and help kids understand what they are being taught. I also am excited to coach cheer. I coached my schools youth teams in high schools and realized I love that.

Graduate education.

For my major, I do not need grad school right away. As a teacher, I can go and work right out of college and then most schools pay for a master's degree while you teach. This is my plan and I am excited to see where I end up teaching. My goal is to be back at home in the district I went to, but I am open to similar ones as well. The community at home is important to me and the school district is really good, so I would love to be back there.

Certifications

In education, you need a license in each state. these are not overly hard to come by but they are required. Private schools may have slightly different requirements because they are not state-funded. You have to get this license before you start teaching so I will definitely prioritize doing that in a timely manner by graduation. I also know it is different states have different licenses, so I will have to keep that in mind if I ever move.

Experience

So for teaching the biggest experience you need is the student teaching. However, after that, you may end up as a long-term sub and then a teacher in that district which is a great way to get a job. Also, coaching jobs, volunteer work, and involvement look really good when applying for teaching positions. So for me I need more just experiences and clubs to be a part of and less job shadowing.

Smart studying

For me, I am in a bunch of credit hours trying to graduate as soon as possible, I have been going out of my way to fill my schedule to make the most of my time here. I also plan my day so that I use my time well and know when I have free time or not. Working and being in a sport keeps me really busy but the experience is worth it. I also plan when I will study and how so that I don't waste time on things that do not matter.

What I am doing now: taking many diffrent classes to see what I like

Just like I took a few Kinesiology classes because I thought that was what I wanted to major in, I also am taking classes to learn more about new things. I am doing this to help make me a more rounded person, and hopefully be able to connect with as many kids as possible in the future. I also am doing this so that I can learn what I like and take more of that, while also seeing what I do not so that when it comes up again I know how to handle it or work through it, because you never know what could come in the future.

Goal setting

Right now, my goals to help me prepare for my career are being creative and curious to try new things. This is something I am not good at, so I made it a goal. I also have a goal to join more clubs in order to learn new things and meet new people. A long-term goal I have is to maintain my current GPA throughout all of college so that I can achieve my dream of teaching in my hometown.

Some people I have ahead of me in the career I want to have are my cheer coaches, previous teachers, and Miami alum. These people are all passionate about their job as well as helping people get there too. I value these people so much because I can always count on them to be there for me, and can always ask for advice. I like to know that I can use these people as resources when I need it.

One event here at Miami that can help me to take steps in the right direction is career fair. This is a great way to practice talking to people, meet professionals and explore life beyond college. Another helpful resource I have is my CAS class. This class has given me countless connections and helpful pieces of insight on how to make the most of my time here as well as introducing me to alumni that do exactly what I want to do.
