The caravel was an invention created by the Portuguese that paved the way for travel over the Atlantic Ocean. Instead of relying on manual labor, it allowed people to travel lightly and used three masts to secure the wind. Using this, countries could now send explorers across the great ocean carrying great masses, and with a cannon, they could dominate larger vessels.

Around the late 1200s to early 1300s, sailors started using a compass. This new advancement used a pivoting needle attached to a compass card in a wooden box. Over the next hundred years, navigators and sailors, such as Christopher Columbus, relied on the compass to help them sail to new parts of the globe.

Wealth was one of the main drivers of exploration for various countries. For Spain specifically, after colonizing Mexico, leaders found out that there was a lot of silver to be mined. Hastily, the Spanish started mining more than 1/3 of the world's silver, and flourished. This was destroyed when Philip II wrote off state debt, and paid other countries using silver. This caused inflation and strained government budgets, as well as hurting nobles and striking the poor.

There are three main reasons for European Exploration. Them being for the sake of their gold, god and glory. They wanted to improve their economy for instance by acquiring more spices, gold, and better and faster trading routes. Also, they really believed in the need to spread their religion, Christianity.

The Rise of the Spanish Empire inspired more exploration

Spanish conquistadors, who were primarily poor nobles from the impoverished west and south of Spain, were able to conquer the huge empires of the New World with the help of military technology, disease (which weakened resistance), and military tactics including surprise attacks and powerful alliances with local tribes. Colonies were governed by viceroys or governors that were chosen by the crown. Settlers had to obey the king’s laws and could make none of their own. Settlers were restricted to Catholicism and all other religions were persecuted. Spanish missionaries saw Native Americans as heathens to be converted to Christianity. The consequences for not converting were severe. Soldiers viewed them as fit only for killing or subjugation. This lead to a very hard life for the indigenous people who land was taken over. They helped inspire other countries like France and England to establish their own foothold in the americas. The wealth brought by the Spanish people to Spain increased the desire for colonization in America.

The slave trade heavily affected European travel and colonization. Taken from their home in Africa, many enslaved people were moved to the Americas in order to work on plantations and provide goods. These were sent back to Europe, and started the cycle again due to the increase in demand. The picture, drawn by an artist at the time, displays the ruthlessness of the Europeans that visited the Americas and Africa.

This work of art depicts the hostile invasion of Europeans into the Americas. Not only do they take land from the Natives, but also forcibly convert them to Christianity. These peaceful people are enslaved and their resources are stolen and exploited. This caused for the colonization of the Americas and settlements made by the Europeans. This paved the way to wiping out the Native's and their culture, almost erasing them from history.
