Berlin was split between the US/Britain (West) and Soviet influence (East). US and Britain were motivated to rebuild West Berlin, and the region prospered more than the Soviet East under the Marshall Plan (give resources to Europe to help rebuild so they don't turn to communism).

The Berlin Blockade was the Soviet Union's attempt to limit resources to the United States, Great Britain and France influenced West Berlin. The aim was to pressure the 2 million West Berliners into Soviet submission by starving them of their resources.

In response to the land route blockade to West Berlin, the United States began a massive airlift of food, water, and medicine to the citizens. Supplies from American planes sustained the over 2 million people in West Berlin.

At a routine press conference on November 9th, 1989, East German spokesperson Günter Schabowski was handed an announcement about relaxed travel regulations that had been written to satisfy unhappy East Germans. It lacked of review and preparation, so on national television, he mistakenly declared that the checkpoints in the Berlin Wall which up until then were guarded by soldiers with orders to shoot anyone trying to cross — were now open. East Berliners rushed to demand they be allowed to cross into West Berlin, in a frenzy of confused guards who were also unaware of the new regulations allowed the pass.

That was it, the wall has fallen. The wall became pointless, but it still symbolizes the repressive USSR and the longstanding hope of Berliners. Berliners wielded pickaxes and hammers, to tear apart the visible symbol of a divided Europe.
