I found the act of creating a Zentangle piece very relaxing. The idea of sitting and engaging very closely to something that is right in front of you provides this awareness and relaxation of the mind. I can see how this task can be beneficial to students and teachers. What I appreciate about this task is that it is both calming and process driven. It allows you to be in the moment and helps turn off any constant chatter in your mind as you slowly come into this present moment of putting pen to paper. I appreciate the tactile experience and think this makes the experience 'real'. Overall, I found this activity to be meditative in nature and highly recommended for stressed out folks!

Mumtaz Mohamoud

I accidentally spilled elderberry syrup on my designated zentangle paper. Just decided to roll with it. Thankful for the moment not looking at a screen and just do something pretty. I often doodle while on zoom calls and it is definitely relaxing but actually keeps me more engaged with the speaker. Otherwise I'd be fidgeting or completely distracted altogether.

I am not the most artistic person, and I think this definitely stressed me out (mental block/art trauma, haha). Despite how bad it looks it still took longer to do than I'd like to admit, and personally I find pencil pretty unforgiving in terms of each line being definitive and 'final' - I know it's erasabled, but never 100%. If I had them I probably would've preferred crayons just so I could blend over mistakes, haha.
I did notice that it was hard for me to stay 'abstract,' even though that's the kind of art I enjoy the most, and that I kept trying to make 'narratives' or 'symbols' out of things. Everyone's are absolutely lovely, though!

Initially, I was pretty apprehensive to start and feeling overwhelmed by making a zentangle. I am not very artistic and usually am the opposite of relaxed when attempting to be. However, the freedom in designing the zentangle did help to calm my nerves and like many of my other classmates, when I finished I was much more relaxed. I can understand how doing this activity in a classroom may be useful in order to calm students as well as allow for their creativity to shine through.
