"Her arms were stretched up at their full length, so that she stood upon the ends of her toes. he then said to her, "now ,you d--d b--h, ill learn you how to disobey my orders!" and after rolling up his sleeves, he commenced to lay on the heavy cow-skin, and soon the warm, red blood (amid heart- rendering shrieks from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor" (Douglass 4).

Douglass recounts the experience of watching the slaveholder whip his aunt until she was covered in blood. Douglass describes the pleasure the slaveholder seemed to take in.He goes into detail with the cruel acts put upon her.

In chapter one when he mentions that he doesn't know his birthday, unlike white citizens, who know all the details of their lives. Beginning with this fact, it establishes that Douglass can be trusted because of his direct personal experience. Douglass has a reliable resource from his own personal experience. his quotes enforces Douglass credibility, because he was once a slave and has experienced these events first hand.

Douglass uses logos when he states the numbers of how much food and clothing they get. They get a monthly and yearly allowance, of food and clothing. If they go throw their allowance they don't get any more. Slaves would mess up their clothing doing work outside, then would have to go without cloths till their next allowance, in the harsh summer heat and the cold winters.
