One group looking at paintings and one group looking at sculptures. The first painting my group looked at was called “Portrait Of An Indian Worker”. This painting was made by Tay Boon Pin. The painting was made to honor workers who helped to build Singapore, such as construction workers. It was also made to show the diversity of Singapore, where people of different races work together. The second painting my group looked at was called “Family Portrait”. This painting was made by Georgette Chen. The painting was made to show the creator’s family, she used both Chinese and Western art styles in this painting, mixing them together to show who she was and where she came from.

We wrote some information about the sculpture on our clipboards and went to another sculpture.

I saw the man in the painting, his eyes looked tired , the background was dark but the man stood out the most. I learned that if you want something to stand out the most in a painting you should make the background darker. Then Ms Jennie took us to see The Family portrait, I saw that all of them were together. Although they were doing different activities I could tell that they were very happy together. I noticed that the mother stood out the most, I could tell that because the artist used black to make shadow which makes it look realistic , 3D and makes it stand out the most.

Our teacher told us that we could come back with our families to try it next time, which made me feel excited about returning. After that, we went to a cool painting area where we used a special brush to touch the screen. Whatever we painted showed up on a big digital screen, which made it feel like magic! We also got to try Chinese calligraphy. It was a bit tricky at first, but we practiced each stroke carefully.

At this section of the National Gallery, it was a place to play. First, I went to a place that has many different activities. There was a torchlight which let us draw on a specific wall. Then, there was a small glowing section with blocks of different shapes we could build and play with. My personal favorite was the foam shapes. It was like a pillow with magnets and we could build several different things with it. After we were done playing, I went to an interactive place with one paintbrush and different stations. The similarity between all these stations were that they all required the paintbrush. After we were done with the different stations, we went to a painting room where we drew chinese words like “草”. This is my most favourite activity before we had to go for our self-guided tour.

She brought us to our first painting with a description it had a story behind it unlike other artworks we viewed. It was a portrait of an Indian worker painted by Tay Boon Pin and she explained to us that when the artist painted it, he added shadows to make it more realistic and different details, we also saw a portrait of a family painted by Georgette Chen. I learnt that we can use shades, light and oil to paint. After that, she told us that now we could explore around with our form teachers and classmates. I was very eager and curious to look at more artworks and play activities.

We first went to see a sculpture called Five Nails.Five Nails is related to Journey To The West because of the story Sun Wukong(The Monkey King) being trapped under a mountain by five fingers of the Buddha, it makes us think about power, control, and the fight for freedom-just like Sun Wukong’s Journey. We then went to a sculpture called The Net.The fishing net reminds us about the fishing communities in Singapore’s past. The sculpture is not just about the dirty river, it also makes us think about how development and modernization affected Singapore's people, environment, and traditions.

After that, we visited the Keppel Centre for Art Education (KCAE), where we got to explore and experience different art activities. One of the most exciting activities was trying out 3D printing. It was a challenging yet fascinating process, as we had to carefully design and create our prints layer by layer. I realized that 3D printing requires patience and precision. Next, we played with a UV torch, using it to draw on special surfaces where our artwork magically appeared under the light. It felt like creating invisible drawings that only the torch could reveal! Lastly, we experimented with the magic paintbrush, which allowed us to paint on a digital screen. It was amazing to see how the brush strokes came to life on a large display.Through these hands-on activities, I learned that art can be interactive and creative in many ways, and I developed a new appreciation for the effort behind digital and 3D artwork.

After everyone gathered outside the National Gallery Singapore, we waited for the bus to arrive. While waiting, we chatted excitedly about our favorite parts of the trip. Once the bus arrived, we paired up with our original partners and took our seats. As we headed back to school, I reflected on my experience, wishing I had tried the UV light and 3D pen. Despite that, I learned something valuable—the river depicted in The Net was once heavily polluted, long before I was born. It took over $1,000,000 to clean it, showing the importance of preserving our environment.

One of the most exciting experiences was using a magic electronic paintbrush to complete a digital painting activity. As we moved the brush across the screen, colors and patterns appeared as if we were painting on a real canvas, blending traditional art with modern technology.

We also tried our hand at Chinese calligraphy, using a black brush and special red paper. Carefully, we practiced each stroke, learning the art of writing beautifully formed characters. The Five Nails was a sculpture made using paperdyesculp, a special material invented by the artist. It was related to Journey to the West because of the story of Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) being trapped under a mountain by five fingers of the Buddha. Through the painting, I learnt that we need to pereserve and fight through out challenges. We also saw some weapons made from plastic and recycled materials. I learnt not to waste items as we can make art from them as I saw the sculpture was all made from recycled materials.

As part of our task, we were asked to find specific sculptures, reflect on how they made us feel, and describe what they reminded us of.

While searching for these sculptures, I came across many other intriguing pieces, each carrying deep meanings and emotions. Some sculptures conveyed sorrow and struggle, while others symbolized hope and resilience. Once I completed my task, I was free to wander and immerse myself in the diverse collection of artworks.

Through this experience, I learned that even a single piece of art can hold a powerful and sometimes haunting message, shaping history and evoking deep emotions in those who view it.

One of the first sculptures we saw was The Longhouse by Shui Tit Sing. The details in the sculpture showed families working together, carrying heavy loads, and climbing stairs, which made me realize how tough life was back then. When I first saw it, I mistook it for a chair because it looked like one. However, after reading the writeup, I realised that it was actually a sculpture representing five large fingernails. The artwork made me think about power, strength, and resilience. It was interesting to see how something as simple as nails could be turned into a meaningful piece of art. This experience taught me to observe artworks more closely and appreciate the deeper messages behind them.

It was a realistic portrait of an Indian worker where it showed a worker who looks strong and determined, showing his hard work and dedication. I learnt that is important to appreciate and respect different people in our community. Next, we went to see the Family Portrait by Georgette Chen. This painting showed Georgette Chen's family. She painted them in a very special way, like how it can be seen in a family photos.

She used both Chinese and Western art styles in this painting, mixing them together to show who she was and where she came from. While viewing the two portraits, we were told not to cross the red line or touch the paintings. At first, I mistook it for a throne, but upon closer inspection, I realized it was actually a sculpture of oversized fingernails.

Next, we saw The Net, a structure made from recycled materials. At first glance, I thought it resembled a cluster of beehives, but I later learned that it symbolized the impact of waste on our environment.

The last exhibit we explored featured World War II artifacts, including old weapons and military helmets. Seeing these historical items gave me a glimpse into the past and the struggles faced during wartime.

It was a realistic portrait of an Indian worker where it showed a worker who looked strong and determined, showing his hard work and dedication. Through the painting, I learnt that it is important to appreciate and respect different people in our community.

After that we went to see The Family Portrait by Georgette Chen. She used both Chinese and Western art styles in this painting, mixing them together to show who she was and where she came from.

I learnt that artists use shading and oil on canvas to create detailed and beautiful paintings.

When we arrived at the museum, our tour guide, Ms. Jennie, took us to see a portrait of an Indian worker by Tan Boo Pin. I noticed that the man in the painting had tired-looking eyes, and the background was dark, which made him stand out the most. I learned that if you want something to be the main focus in a painting, using a darker background can help make it more prominent.

Next, Ms. Jennie showed us The Family Portrait by Geogette Chen. I saw that the family was together, and even though they were doing different activities, they looked very happy. I noticed that the mother stood out the most because the artist used black to create shadows, making the painting look more realistic and 3D. This technique helped bring depth to the artwork and made certain details stand out more.

We had so much fun experimenting with colors and patterns. Through these activities, I learnt that art can be both fun and creative.

We went to see the artwork, and my personal favorite was Five Fingers. It was created by Sun Wukong, and I found it truly fascinating. The details and technique used in the piece made it stand out to me.

Another artwork that caught my attention was The Net. It looked like the artist had used recycled materials, which made it unique and environmentally conscious. I admired how they transformed everyday items into a meaningful piece of art, showcasing creativity and sustainability at the same time.

When I first saw Five Fingers, I thought it was a chair, but I was wrong—everyone said it was actually a nail. As I continued exploring, I saw a net filled with rubbish. It conveyed an important message about keeping Singapore’s oceans clean to protect marine life, such as fish and whales.

I also felt like I was inside someone’s stomach because the whole place was red, like blood. It was an exciting experience!

One of the paintings we saw was a portrait of an Indian worker by Tay Boon Pin. It was incredibly realistic, depicting a strong yet tired Indian worker. This painting conveyed appreciation and respect for workers.

We also saw a portrait by Georgette Chen, which depicted a family. It provided insight into families from the past and reflected cultural heritage.

Our teacher told us that we could come back next time with our family members to try it, which made me excited about returning. After that, we explored different areas where we used a special brush to touch the screen. When we painted an animal, it appeared on a big digital screen, which felt like magic!

We also got to try Chinese calligraphy. It was a bit tricky at first, but with practice, it became easier. It was really fun to use the brush and see all the beautiful paintings. I cannot wait to try it again next time!

After all that fun, we all went to our Self-Guided Tour (We all are excited for our Self-Guided Tour were you excited?) We all saw a sculpture called Five Nails. The five nails make me though that it was a chair that we can sit on, when I saw that the West I saw something then I read it and found out that it was not a chair it just a five nails.

Finally, we all saw a another sculpture that sculpture was called The Net I find it very amazing. It reminded me about the fishing net and it also make us think about how developers have affected Singapore’s people in the past
