Best. UTEC Circles! We need more circles. Possibly weekly circles with staff, broken up into a few circles around UTEC where we could discuss one or two issues per week. This allows us to really hear what our fellow staff are thinking and feeling. What each of us needs from each other. We cannot make UTEC better if we do not hear how people feel.
Missing. FI (Fresh Inspirations) with staff and young adults. There was a time when lots of staff attended FI and we had a circle at the end for about 15 minutes with staff and young adults sharing together.
Benefit. Staff and young adults would feel closer to each other. Most important, young adults would feel like staff want to listen and care what they are feeling. UTEC is growing and hiring lots of new wonderful staff. What better way to learn about each other than join in a circle together.

As I find myself on this committee, I notice that I am the only person here representing the Program Manager role in our Workforce Development Program. Furthermore, as the person who developed our Woodworking Program here at UTEC, I am acutely aware that we currently have no staff of color in our department. It is my belief that our Woodworking Program (and all programs that work directly with our Youth) should contain staff with the same racial diversity as the Young Adults that we serve. Our organizations inability to attract racially diverse candidates to past and present open positions in Woodworking speaks to this need. Is our organization committed to understanding what it will take to attract and hire a skilled Woodworking instructor (Program Manager) with the same racial diversity as our Young Adults - or a skilled Woodworking Production Manager that looks like our Young Adults? Are we willing to attract them by paying a salary that is comparable with what they can earn doing the same work in the private sector? Are we willing to put the needed energy into finding great candidates that meet our criteria for these positions? If not, then who do we expect to engage, inspire, train, and lead our Young Adults to the unparalleled career opportunities that exist in the skilled crafts and trades related industries?
I look forward to a UTEC that invests the energy and resources needed to have a thriving Workforce Development Program that inspires and engages our Young Adults as they learn they can have a fulfilling career that allows them to realize their dreams and hopes for the future.
