" "repetition"- is like playing a peekaboo game with a child. You're going to do it over and over.. But you've got to keep change it up...otherwise he'll expect it."

The Isley brothers infamous “Shout part 1 and 2” uses repetition of the certain phrases to create a dialogue between them and their fans and encourages audience to physical engage with the song by dancing. The track also features a second version of the song that's a little more wilder and upbeat than the first but still retains the main core of the first song.

" The best of what we call repetition in music, heard closely, is really the opposite of repetition: subtle differences, slowly shifting backgrounds, a change moving against a constant"

In the first chapter of the novel, Every Song Ever written by Ben Ratliff, explores the ideas and context of what repetition means and how it impacts music. Repetition can be found in many outlets such as day to day routine, art, etc. but in music it’s about how repetition paired with variation is used by many artist to provoke more active listening. I agree with what Ratliff has to say on what repetition is and how artists use it to their advantage.
