Since the weather was sweltering, she suggested we cool off by jumping into the fountain in front of the building. The water was to hallow to swim in, but we paddled around pretending to be crocodiles until we attracted a small crowd  of people who kept insisting Mom that swimming was forbidden in the fountain." (page.104) This picture of the fountain reflects the day that mom encouraged her kids to jump in because they needed to "cool off." This is an example of broken promise because  Rex told Jeanette that he would stop drinking for Jeanette as her birthday present, but he never accomplished that promise. He said it was my Christmas present."(page.40)  This picture of the two people looking up at the stars, reflects Rex and Jeanette discussing about which star she should choose and you could see their close relationship. This is an example of unconditional love because although Rex is irresponsible and a drunk, he still loves his kids regardless. He gives each of his kids a star to call it their own, except Jeanette decided on the planet Venus. I put on a lot of makeup , my best dress--it was purple, with tiny white dots and a sash that tied in the back-- and a pair of Mom's high heels , since we wore the same size. Then I walked around the mountain to apply for the job." (page.214) This picture reflects Jeanette independence in getting a job herself in order to have enough food to feed her siblings. I was going to New York City as soon as the school year was out." (page. 237) This picture reflects Jeanette's final decision to go live in New York and has the courage to finally leave town. This is an example of Coming of Age because Jeanette had been wanting to leave town and get away from a bad life she was living.
