I”t Was hard to keep hope alive, when there was so little to feed it”-
Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park- Salva, pg. 85
Ever heard of the word, “resilience”? It means, “ Able to recover or stand up quickly after difficult conditions.” When Salva states the quote above, he is showing that times are difficult, and there isn't much positivity to fuel his hopes of surviving, and perhaps finding a family to call his own. The author is trying to give the reader a sense of Salva’s ordeals and difficulties, and how Salva is able to demonstrate grit to keep going. Salva reflects on his life of five years in two, harsh-conditioned, refugee camps. In the real world, people who stop when things are hard, never get anywhere, however people who push past the boundaries are the ones that break the barriers and achieve. Michael Jordan never stopped when he failed, he kept persisting, and now, he is one of the most well known N.B.A players alive. This quote impacted my thinking on others in the world. I think everyone should be thankful for how much we do in fact have, than complaining about what we don’t. We may not have everything someone else does, but we should remember that we are extremely lucky to be able to live the lives we lead. Perhaps if there is nothing good happening in life, giving up will just be more negativity. However, if you try, chances are you will succeed, and even if you don’t, at least you will walk away knowing you tried.

This quote showed that Salva was trying to stay positive, even though there was nothing to be positive about or no reason to stay hopeful. It connected to my life because I try my hardest to stay hopeful in tough situations.

When Salva was kicked out of the refugee camp and he was walking to kenya Salva says, “One step at a time… one day at a time. Just today-just this day to get through...” p. 82. What that means to me is if you go just one step at a time you can go one day at a time and then you can survive. The author is trying to make the reader understand how Salva and all the boys that were with him survived the entire walk to kenya. This quote impacted my thinking about me thinking my life is hard when Salva had to go through much worse things to get somewhere safe. He could have died many times but he survived and then he went on for his family. Even though everyone he loved or cared about died he still survived and ended up going to america.

When all the people from the Itang camp were walking to Kenya, the narrator said ¨ And one day at a time, the group made its way to Kenya.¨ pg. 82

This quote means that they are going to Kenya. I also learned from the context that they are going to the Ifo camp in Kakuma. In this sentence, the author is trying to make you understand that it's not easy to walk a year and a half to somewhere. And especially when you are the leader of the group. This quote has changed my thinking about walking. I mean, I barely walk a mile with my parents and I think that is long. Now, I will try to remember that at least I'm not walking something like 100 miles a day.

It was as if people ceased to be people and instead became an enormous herd of panicked, stampeding two-legged creatures.¨ So what this means is. The people at the refugee camp we're scared by the soldiers and so they ran away and since their we're so many of them they looked like something else running across the ground. This came from the chaos. The author is trying to get the reader to understand how hectic it was in the moment. Imagine someone coming into where you lived with other people for seven years and driving you away from this place. Of course it is hectic. The quote made me think about how that would happen in real life. Someone walks into my house with gun and forces us out of the place I live in. How is that fair? I now realize how lucky I am to live in Marin in California. Where it is mostly safe.

I think this is important because the quote is basically explaining that Salva needs to keep his hope alive cause if he does he could have a great chance of surviving these next six years and getting out of Sudan. Evaluate (Challenge): Some of the connections that can be made from the meaning of the quote is to always hold onto hope throughout the toughest times cause if you do they might get easier.

They had been killed by bullets or bombs, starvation or sickness-it did not matter how. What mattered was that Salva was on his own now”. So, what that means is that all the puzzle pieces that have been given by his uncle and events about his family being alive or gone, are connected. They finally make sense. Salva finally realizes the truth. And now he feels alone. The author is trying to make the reader understand that now Salva realizes that his family is gone and he feels alone and sad. His reaction is not dramatic sobs, but is shock. Stone cold hard shock. It even says in the book that Salva “were standing at the edge of a giant hole-a hole filed with the black despair of nothingness”. That is deep. He feels like nothing and he is alone. He does not know what to do.
This quote significantly impacted my thinking about how much my family means to me. It makes my empathy level soar for someone I have never met in my life. It makes me realize that it does not matter how big a house you have, or how much ‘stuff’ you have, but how much happiness you have in your life. Salva and his family had a small house and little food, but those challenges do not affect how much his family means to him. Now that he is alone, and all of those memories resurface, I feel more than fortunate.

When Salva and other boys had got across the Gilo River he had to lead them to Kenya. “I will get us safely to Kenya, no matter how hard it is”. I think this means that he will never give up as a leader and lead everyone to safety. He will also stand up to anything in his way. The importance of this is that without his leadership 1,500 kids would have died. He also is now older and can lead people to safety. What this quote really connected to in the real world is leadership. With leadership you can do great things like get a good a job and support people to be there best which can lead them into farther things in life by just saying those words. Everyday people complain about the stupidest things, when people out there are walking away from war and all that they had at their home. There the ones that really should be complaining.

You need only to walk as far as those bushes.”So, what that means is that Salva is persevering and Uncle is encouraging and motivating to Salva. The Conflict is that Salva realizes that he is alone at the camp and he is finding a way to persevere Linda Sue Park is trying to make to readers realize that Uncle is trying to motivate Salva into making one step at a time to the bush. The real world connection to this quote is that when anything in life gets too hard and you want to give up think of those bushes that Salva made it to. Also be a motivator when you see someone struggling e a motivator. This quote significantly impacted my thinking about the way I should address hard situations where I should think of the bushes instead of stopping and not doing it

Just today-just this day to get through.” So, what this means is that Salva uses this quote as a motivation tool for him to get going through one day at a time. Salva doesn’t focus on the next day, he just perseveres through one, then the next. The author is trying to make the reader understand that sometimes when you think about getting through one day at a time, you realize that it’s easier to get through it. You can only worry about getting through today, then tomorrow. This quote significantly impacted my life because it made me realize how easy it is just to think about getting through one day, one step at a time. I think this could also inspire a lot of other kids who stress out over the “next day” and who aren’t aware of that they can just zoom into the moment.

When Men with guns are forcing Salva and the rest of the camp out of Ethiopia the narrator says, “It was if people ceased to be people and instead became an enormous herd of two legged creatures”.
So, what the means is “ People did not act like people, they acted like a herd of animals on two legs”.
The author is trying to make the reader understand what a chaotic time it was and how people reacted to the men treating them like animals. They were shooting and chasing them away from Ethiopia. They were running for their lives. The importance of the quote is the conflict of character's vs. society.
This quote significantly impacted my thinking about how devastating it must have been to be driven out of the only home they had left. If people ceased to be people it must have been horrible for them to be that situation.

When the docter tells Nya’s family that the water Akeer drinks has to be boiled, Nya says, “And even at home, whenever Nya made the long hot walk to the pond, she had to drink as soon as she got there. She would never be able to keep Akeer from doing the same.” This means is that when Akeer fetches water at the pond and drinks the muddy water, she will keep getting sick, but Nya won’t be able to tell her not to drink the water. Nya is in a tough situation; if she does let Akeer drink muddy water, she will get sick, but if she doesn’t, she will become dehydrated and exhausted. This is character vs. self internal conflict, because it is a very hard decision for Nya. This made me think about how people in other countries don’t even have clean water to drink, and to get muddy water they have to walk eight hours. It makes me reflect on how lucky I am.
