Review: I really like when a novel is in verse for a purpose! Here, Marcie writes poems in a blue spiral notebook to tell her story. Her parents are getting divorced, and she’s forced to move to New Hampshire away from her boyfriend, Linus, and her group of friends, the leftovers. This book makes so much sense as a novel in verse, and I couldn’t picture it any other way. I also couldn’t put it down! The book begins with two perspectives: Ray, a young American soldier, and Hideki, a young Okinawan civilian both thrown into the battle between America and Japan. As the battle lines draw closer and closer on the island, both Ray and Hideki see the many horrors of war. Review: While I’m glad to have read this classic, I can’t say that I particularly liked it. I definitely appreciated it. I certainly see why it’s a classic that should be read (especially in today’s society), but it’s just so depressing! I wanted rebellion and courage and sacrifice, but instead I was met with gloom and hopelessness.
