Truss Bridges

Truss bridges are supported by a series of "trusses" which are triangular structures that are very stable
There are more variations in truss bridges than in the other main bridge types, and many of the other types incorporate trusses in their design
The trusses can be found underneath the roadbed (deck truss) , supporting it on either side (pony truss) , or on the sides and top (through truss). There are lots of other variations that include the other types of bridges.
Pictured below is the Tokyo Gate Bridge in Japan. It is nicknamed the Dinosaur bridge because its truss structures look like two dinosaurs facing each other.

Suspension Bridges

Suspension bridges can be very expensive. The Guinness World record for most expensive bridge is held by California's Bay Bridge (pictured below). It cost $6.3 billion to reconstruct in 2002 after an earthquake destroyed sections in 1989.
Suspension bridges are made of two (or more) vertical towers and two long horizontal cables that rise along the sides of the bridge and fall into an inverted arch between the towers. Numerous short vertical cables known as suspenders connect the horizontal cables to the roadway. Most of the weight on the bridge is supported by the two towers.
The horizontal cables are secured on either end of the bridge by rock or concrete anchorages, which pull outward on the towers with equal force as the road pulls inward on the towers, balancing out the force.
The Golden Gate Bridge is the most well-known suspension bridge in the world. Other famous suspension bridges include Tower Bridge in London, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, and the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe, Japan, the longest suspension bridge ever built.
The Golden Gate bridge also incorporates trusses and arches in its construction

Arch Bridges

Arch bridges were developed by the ancient Romans and are still in use today.
Arch bridges were first built with stone and brick, but are now mainly built using steel and concrete.
Arch bridges work by distributing weight across a curved arch and onto two abutments on either end.
Pictured below is Pont Valentré in Cahors, France. It was finished in 1380 after 70 years of construction. It has eight arches and is registered as a UNESCO world Heritage site as part of the pilgrimage routes of Santiago de Compostela

Beam Bridges

Beam bridges are very easy to build and consist of a flat horizontal slab that lays atop two vertical supports at either end.
Simple beam bridges do not usually measure longer than 250 feet.
Beam bridges can be connected over longer distances on multiple supports to form continuous span bridges.
The longest bridge in the world is a continuous span bridge called the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway. It is located in Louisiana. and spans about 24 miles.
The primary building materials for highway beam bridges are steel and concrete.
When weight is added to a traditional beam bridge, it bends in the middle.

I used my Construction Engineering Building Blocks toys to build my bridge. I first started off with 2 of my big blocks by connecting them with a toy screws. After that I used 2 steel cups for the abutments.I screwed wheels to the bottom of the block and inserted into the steel cups. I did a small earthquake test and wiggled the bridge. The cars did not fall down.

I did arches underneath the deck of the bridge. For the abutments I used books. For the deck of the bridge and the arches I used cardboard. This is how I built it: I started off with the arch by bending the cardboard pieces so it could be curved. I used 3 cardboard pieces for the arches. Next, for the deck of the bridge I used a large piece of cardboard and I glued the deck to the arches. When it was done drying I cut the yellow paper into strips and glued it to the deck to make it like a road. I tested it with 5 cars. And that was my arch bridge!

Cable-stayed bridges are similar to suspension bridges but can be built with just one tower instead of a suspension's two. This often makes this type of bridge a cheaper alternative to the expensive suspension bridge.
Cables stem from the tower and come down to the deck to support it, with two common patterns, radial and parallel.
In a parallel cable series, cables are attached at different heights along the tower, running parallel to one other. In a radial pattern, the cables extend from several deck points to a single point at the top of the tower.
For longer spans, you can build cable-stayed towers in a series to extend the bridge's length.

I built my bridge out of magnet tiles and paper

My bridge could barely hold 7 magnet tiles with one sheet of paper for the arch. But when I added more paper to the arch it could hold 7 magnet tiles with only a little sag!

First, I want to make a bridge between my toy buckets. I found lego board. And I made two piers with lego. I use plain paper for making arch between piers. But printing paper didn't work. It was too weak. So, I change paper to card stock for supporting the deck. I put the folding big paper as a deck and try to cross the bridge with my toy cars. It works!

I want to make a bridge between my plastic toy boxes. First I went to get my materials. Then I found big green lego board and put it on top of my two plastic boxes. I started to test it out with one lego board. It works but, the lego board bent and shook. So, I added one more lego board to make my bridge stronger. At this time, I fixed the bending problem but still it is shook. I added string to hold it. Finally my bridge is worked well. After that I put decorations on to make it look a bit realistic.

I made a pony truss bridge between two chairs. My mom helped me to use hot glue. I learned how to use hot glue. I need to be careful and it was fun! First, I made big triangles as side of the bridge. However, it was a bit weak and wiggly. So I add more sticks to make small extra triangles. In this way the bridge became strong!

Beam Bridges are the simplest structural forms of bridge spans supported by an abutment or pier at each end.
I have constructed a beam bridge using tall, inverted glasses as abutment and laid a cardboard strip across it. I have used few jenga blocks, legos and toy cars as live loads to show how much weight it can hold.

From this, beam bridge model, I learnt that if the abutment is farther apart, the bridge gets weaker. Beam bridges can often only used for short distances since they have no built in supports. The only supports are provided by abutments. In order to use for greater distances, series of beam bridges must be joined together, creating a continuous span.

An arch bridge is a bridge with abutments at each end shaped as a curved arch. They have abutments, supports on the ground at both ends, on either side of the arch for added support.

I have used short, inverted glasses as abutments and laid a cardboard strip across it and also used curved cardboard strip between the abutments and below the top cardboard strip. From this arch bridge model, I learnt that the weight, is distributed instead of just pushing it straight down. I have used jenga blocks, legos and toy cars as live loads to show how much weight it can hold.

A truss bridge is a bridge whose load-bearing superstructure is composed of a truss, a structure of connected elements, usually forming triangular units.

They commonly are used in covered bridges, railroad bridges, and military bridges.

I have constructed a truss bridge using stack of books as abutments on either side. I also used popsicle sticks as triangular units which represents my truss and used toy cars/bikes as live loads.

This was a suspension bridge.Sadly,it got broken before I could post it.The towers were cups.Rubber bands held down the top,made of straws.Rubber bands held up the deck.

This is my beam bridge.I used:Jenga blocks, coins,tape ,and 2 bowls.I made a sturdy platform by making 2 layers, one as the main bridge part and the bottom layer as the support under the bridge.I used some extra blocks to make the sides and taped 2 blocks together on each side to make the bridge and the land(bowls)connecting.My bridge could hold:20 quarters,7 nickels,13 dimes and 24 pennies.I think it could hold all of those coins because there was a lot of support underneath the bridge and it was made out of a strong material(wood).
