I've been wanted to do a virtual tour of Barcelona (and hopefully the Sagrada Familia!) and I think I'm going to try it with this week's assignment using NearPod

One good thing about covid is that it has "pushed" me to use virtual access to resources and connect with opportunities to broaden the viewpoint of my students. I've located virtual tours of businesses that allow students to experience the daily workings in a company. I am also hoping to connect with alumni students from my previous worksite ... students who have completed Accounting/business classes in high school and have gone on to college and variety of careers. It's so much better for students to hear from someone young who has actually "been there". Personal job shadowings are limited now so virtual connections through zoom for example are the next best thing.

When it comes to my most difficult class this semester, I noticed that the more I talk, the more disruptive they become. When I use these ideas the disruptions start to become less and less because the students are taking ownership of their learning and I can act as more of a guide as I move around the room helping them with the assignment. It also allows for more one-on-one instruction.

I'm teaching Principles of Bus/Finance for the first time this semester. One of my goals is to incorporate several curriculum projects. One that each student has going all semester is a focus on a corporation of their choice. They are developing a slide deck portfolio of the company, operations, current events, stock valuations, etc. A good topic for me to add in to the project would be a global look at their operations/marketing/employees and how they might differ from operations in the states.

It's very helpful for my accounting students to get a glimpse into the "real world" of life as an Accountant. Before moving to NC I had a strong community connection that provided opportunities for my Acctg students. I also partnered with an Acctg firm to have my upper level students experience " a day in the life" of ... excellent insight and mentoring for the students. This is certainly something I could work on to connect to the Wilmington businesses.

In POBF course as I implement a variety of projects I try to make them more "open ended" which requires to the students to work collectively. They also have to develop their own plan... exploring new ways to accomplish a task. Just before break they had to plan an assembly line process from prototype of a bookmarker to preparing a purchase requisition form of ALL supplies they needed (within a set budget), flowchart for the assembly line and then the production. They did amazing!

I haven't gotten to the unit yet, but I plan to implement Canva for the Marketing unit project. I always try to have students in POBF do at least one bigger project. Canva should work great ... something I have not used before either.

I keep going to my POBF students (mainly 9th graders and motivation comes and goes).. they have really enjoyed and been actively involved in our team projects. I've been impressed --- some involve technology (chosen corporate project) to the hands on assembly line. I have enjoyed the student interaction in these projects. A tech roadblock I have to "slay" is the thought that technology projects tend to be more individual with one student at a computer and the others not actively engaged. I have to develop tech tools and ideas that have a higher level of team involvement.

My roadblock would be being afraid to try some of the newer apps and technology. I'm comfortable with google slides and implement them frequently with student sharing/collab. I've recently been digging into Canva. and Wow! this is the coolest thing. I can't wait to use with my HS1 class. They are super quiet, even at this point in the semester when they are usually ultra familiar and talkative. I have found that Peardeck helps w/engagement but there are many SEL templates in Canva and I will implement them daily when we return. I will submit my recent presentation in the GCR area.

Imagine kids coming back and presenting to the students about New Hanover County Meetings and the ideas and info that they learned from it.
