Writing a Job Description

When writing a job description, it is important to think about what specific skills are needed. We come up with the skills based on the job analysis and the job specifications. Those skills must be listed clearly so that the right candidates can apply to them. Not only that but the job description should include the tasks needed to be performed by the employee, the education level or experience needed, and any physical requirements if needed.

There are many skills needed in order to succeed in the Human Resource Management department. You must be able to multitask, great at communication skills both verbal and non-verbal, and have a strategic mindset. Those skills are important because you are constantly working in different parts of the business and you must be able to adapt to changes and be able to work with all parts of the company. You are there to coach your employees, so without those skills, the company may not be as strong, and conflict will keep coming up.

Employment Laws

There are 3 main laws that I got a better understanding of this course. The first is ADA (American’s with Disabilities Act) which is put in place so that a company cannot refuse to hire you if you have a qualified disability. Companies are required to offer “reasonable” accommodations for disabled workers. The next one is the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) which was put in place to help regulate minimum wage, child labor. The part of this law that usually causes lawsuits is overtime. There are specific rules for overtime that must be followed. The last law is the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act). This law states that all employees are allowed to take 12 weeks a year of leave without the loss of their job or fear of retaliation. The 3 reasons someone can take this time off is for the birth or adoption of a child, to handle a serious health issue of their own, or to take care of a child, spouse, or parent with a serious health issue.

Diversity

What it means to have diversity in the workplace is to have employees of all race, gender, religion and age. The workplace needs to focus more on who the person is and what they can do and not what the person looks like. I think it’s really important for organizations to be diverse. The reason is because according to the video “Color brave or Color blind”, diversity allows for new insights to come within the organizations. When a company doesn’t have diversity, they are not known of the new possibilities. This cause a hinder in the organization’s growth. Having diversity will allow an organization to grow and become more than what they thought they could ever be.

“I think... if it is true that
there are as many minds as there
are heads, then there are as many
kinds of love as there are hearts.”
-Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Resolving Conflict

Approaching a conflict from the perspective that will help others achieve their goals is the most effective way to resolve a conflict. By doing that, you are facing the conflict with a goal set and with intent to resolve it successfully. Another way to resolve a conflict is by approaching it calmly and not by confrontation. You want to set a tone that is calm so that everyone involved in the conflict can come up with a fair and fast resolution. When dealing with conflict, it is crucial to be understanding of the other sides point of view. Ignoring their viewpoint will just cause more conflict that will cause problems in the workplace in the future.

“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.”
-Plato

Effective communication is importation because often times conflicts arise due to the lack of communication. Effective communication works when everyone is actively listening and understanding the point being made. Some other effective communication skills include asking questions, providing feedback and positive body language. Without effective communication, there is no success.

Every employer has their own way they go about terminating employees. Some have set guidelines in place and others don't. The most common termination process seen is verbal warning, written warning, suspension and then finally getting fired. An employer is not obligated to give multiple warnings before firing you.

In Human Resource Management, we focus on both internal and external factors. Some internal factors include the staff, the polices that are put in place, training and most importantly communication. Some external factors would be technology, what it is that you expect from employees in order for them to be the right fit and success for the company, and also diversity. Using both of those factors will lead to success of the organization.

Organizational assessment is used to asses what skill, abilities and knowledge your company requires. Occupational assessment assesses which skills, knowledge, and abilities are needed for a specific job. An individual assessment assesses an employee’s performance. This will determine if they need more training. All three levels are important because it will allow you to figure out where an employee may need improvement.

The company must put their employees first and customers second because the role of the employees is to put the customers first. If the employees are what causes an organization to have a unique experience and value, then the roles of managers should be to encourage their employees. An employee can be motivated especially through recognition. When an Employer shows their employee that they appreciate what they do, it drives the employee to keep working hard. Appreciation can be shown through small gestures like free lunch, a day off, or a simple email.
