ARH 206.R32 Fall 2024 Padlet 2: Make Your Own Studio Portrait! by Julia Sledge

ARH 206.R32 Modern Art Padlet 2: Make Your Own Studio Portrait (week 11, due 11/08) This week we are studying Studio Photography in West Africa in the 1950s, when photographers in newly or soon to be independent countries loved dressing up their subjects and disguising themselves. Please set up a very simple "home studio," with a fun background, and take a new self-portrait of yourself (known to us in our time as a selfie). How will you picture yourself, what kind of background will you use, and what kind of object or objects will you include as an emblem or emblems of your modernity? Please feel free to ask a friend to pose in your place, or, if you like to draw, you are welcome to draw your self-portrait instead. Post your pictures with a short comment telling us what you decided to do and why. Please include your name in the title! Don't forget to submit a screenshot to Brightspace.

Hi everyone! My studio portrait was taken in my own studio space at home! I have a literal background in studio art from my undergraduate studies and for a long time was a painter, made evident by the paintings in my photo's background. In undergrad at Adelphi University, I explored mixed media and installation in my campus studio but kept my home studio devoted to my paintings. I miss my studio practice and working in this cozy space every night; taking this photo in a space I love so dearly has inspired me to fully commit to painting again once I finish my master's degree. Something to look forward to! I am also looking forward to seeing how you will approach this Padlet!

Hello, I usually draw, sew, and do digital art on this bed. I also paint, but I do that outside my bed and the living room floor since oil paint potentially explodes if left in a hot room. So, my usual work position can be described as Quasimodo; there is no back comfort at all.

I am a multi-disciplinary undergraduate senior at Stony Brook, meaning there is no time for a social life.

Hello Everybody !! My studio Portrait was taken by me at my own desk in my room at my House!! As a Undergraduate most of my studies, Assignments and group projects are done in my desk and most of my work are in my laptop hence you see my wonderful laptop behind me. I have a huge admiration for nature and trees which is there is a lot of leaves, small tree sculptures and tree pots in my desk and even my laptop wallpaper is influenced by it. I also loved Studio Ghibli( Which is a Animation Studio known for their unique animation style ) . I tired to bring that to my desk to feel the same time of coziness as I work on my long homework. My laptop has the Wallpaper of "Totoro" which is a Character from Studio Ghibli. Additionally I am a huge bookworm which is why you can a my book collection behind me. I also love scented candles and I light them up when I am studying. Working on my assignments also looking at my books really motivates me and when I take a break I can easily reach out to one of the books and read them. My favorite strawberry pencil case is also seen in my desk since I love to take notes on notebooks I can easily take out my colorful pens and get my work done. Overall, MY desk is my favorite place to chill, study and also my most favorite part which is diving into the world of my favorite books !!

Hello Everyone! My studio portrait was taken in my room. My desk in my room is where most of my academics are done at. I study or do some sort of homework here everyday. So, with saying that I like to make it feel comfortable beyond the actual furniture. Firstly, my computer is very large it is the black box up against my wall that has the colorful fans in it. That computer allows me to run the 2 monitors that sit right in front of me to either play games or do my homework. I always have a candle lit which is what you can see behind me on my desk. Now that Halloween is over that means for me Christmas is next so I changed my screensavers to a Christmas vibe and I lit a vanilla bean candle. Above my computer I have a panel painting of the NYC skyline. It's 4 canvases that are put closely together of different sizes and they basically make up one big canvas. The shelves that are in my corner have a variety of things on them. Every vacation I go on I buy some sort of animal whether its made out of glass or the color I buy something and put it on my shelf to remember the trip by. I also have some fake succulents and a card that I framed from my girlfriend that's on the top shelf. Overall, my desk is super important to me and it is the best place for me to be productive and also have some fun and play some games once in a while.

My “home studio” is tucked away in the family garage behind an array of tools, supplies, and the big blue ladder over my shoulder. Despite the busyness of the table (as seen during an ongoing household project) these two simple yet beautiful paintings bring both added tranquility and order.

These two paintings are in fact not mine; they are among dozens left behind from my younger sister’s adolescent years. Over the years and throughout the COVID pandemic, she enjoyed painting with the time she was at home. Her work currently serves as a sensational source of both inspiration and creativity for whenever I'm in my "home studio" :)

My studio portrait was taken at my desk at my dorm room. There isn't much on my desk besides my school supplies. I usually keep my notebooks tucked away in the corner of my desk, propped up by a teddy bear. But since it's exam season, I have everything out and my desk is a mess. I love collecting trinkets and stuffed animals, but a majority of my things are left at home. On my desk I do keep a box full of calico critters. Sometimes I take them out to decorate the upper shelf of my desk with but at the moment the chosen trinkets on display haven't been cycled out for a month. I really like cute things, and have quite an amount of My Melody's in possession, but the ones I have on my desk and not on a bag/at home are a small red plush and a headband dangling on the corner of my desk.

While my desk isn't well decorated, I feel that it is representative of who I am as a person. In the modern world, I participate in consumerism by buying myself treats. However, I am able to sort out my priorities and dedicate this area to schoolwork.

Hello all! My studio portrait was taken in my dorm room, the place where I spend a big chunk of my time. My studio consists of my school essentials: laptop, iPad, notebook, pens, pencils, etc.—you get the idea. My non-school-related essentials, aka my real studio area, consist of my books, guitar, beloved bed, and electric kettle for my amateur coffee-making. I enjoy doing things in the comfort of my room, so this desk has really been through a lot of my life in such a short period of time.

It’s already midterm season, so a lot of my time at my studio recently has just consisted of studying and scrolling through YouTube Shorts (it has a chokehold on me). When I'm going through the normal, non-stressful weeks of school, I tend to read, journal, play guitar, and watch movies at my desk, with a handful of spontaneous studying sessions here and there. My studio is really just a glimpse into my life and how I allocate my time (not well). Among all the things that I want to be doing, I unfortunately now have to turn this studio into a predominantly work-only zone.

Hello everyone! My home studio is the common area of my dorm. This has to be my favorite place in my suite because it is where my suitemate and I always hang out. We eat dinner together, play games together, do homework together and talk here. No matter the time of the day, someone is always out here just chilling. As you can see, I posed with my computer which is my object of modernity. I do so much on my computer like doing my homework assignments or keeping up to date on any news or even watching Netflix or Youtube. There is also a Pitbull tapestry which is also an object on modernity since it is a current, relative object that exhibits the trends of our current times. Since it is currently midterm season and final season is quickly approaching, I rely on the common area as a place to just relax and not care about my worries for a few minutes. I like that I have space where I can do work but also have fun, it's a nice little balance of both.

My studio portrait was taken on my desk at home! I decided to use this area since its where I've gotten my work done all throughout high school and now university! On the corner of my desk I have a lamp gifted to me as a graduation gift from one of my favorite high school teachers, however, I don't often have it on because I like studying and doing work uncomfortably with an overhead light. Inside the lamp/pen holder I have various pencils, highlights, and a little rubber duck I got as a gift from one of my dearest friends. I typically don't display the gifts I get but I kept this one out since I use it as a little stress reliever when I do work. Overhead I have a a basket of makeup I left out since it's easy and quick to grab. Next to the basket, although you might not be able to see it, I have hairbands, some earrings laying around, a bag of chips, my headphones, and my celsius as I'm about to "lock in." As I'm writing this, I've come to realize how much of my time I actually spend at this desk, whether if it's on call with my friends, studying, doing makeup, or having dinner (at times). My desk is really an invaluable part of my personal area/space, as it's the place where I can comfortably do work and have fun without being disturbed!

For me a bit of clutter is comforting especially when im away from home, some of my things remind me of people I love. Such as my legos and loads and loads of pictures. As you can see, the wall next my desk is full of pictures taken either on my disposable camera or polaroids. These pictures remind me of people who I love dearly and the amazing memories I have with them. Other than school work, my desk is used to color in my coloring book when I need to destress and most recently used for my ceramic creativity.

The area I decided to use is a shelf where there's some art I have done and where a lot of my creativity comes from. Some of my inspiration for my art comes from using my tarot cards, my love for nature, and especially the memories with my wife (hence the photo albums). This space has so many amazing things that make it so unique and special to me. From a piece of wood where I used it to practice my wood burning, which ended up turning into a collage. This space overall is very therapeutic for me, it provides motivation and peace.

My studio portrait is my dorm room. This room seems to encompass everything about me. In particular, the desk is one of the items on which I spend the most time, especially for studying and taking exams. This desk is essential for studying, and it always has my iPad and MacBook on it. Both of these items represent my modernity. This is because my main responsibility is studying, and without these two items and my desk, studying would be very inconvenient and difficult. Additionally, beyond studying, these two items are also used when I relieve stress. Watching YouTube helps me de-stress, and these are essential tools for that. Therefore, the desk, iPad, and MacBook are symbols of me and represent my modernity.

I'm staying here in my room Tubman Hall for 2 semesters. For me, it serves as a healing area to rest, work on projects, eat, and sleep. Since it was so chilly when I first arrived at the dorm, I gave it a lot of thought as to whether I could live here, but now that I have an electric pad and a decent heater, I am getting along just fine. In particular, I prepared for the job interview this time by spending a lot of time in my room. While getting ready for the virtual interview, I practiced a lot at my desk and would lie down in bed to unwind when I was having trouble. I occasionally contact my buddies there and have them bring the dinner. I frequently get together with my friends in my room because it is larger than the other rooms on the second or third floor due to its ground floor location.

I decided to take my studio portrait at my desk and the surrounding area. I usually do homework, write discussion posts, and study for exams at my desk. For the past two years, I've hated sitting at my desk to do work and always preferred the busy library atmosphere. However, this semester, I feel like I was able to make my dorm room cozy enough to be able to sit down and do work.

I tend to keep my desk area relatively clear, but I decorated in the interior with polaroid pictures of my close family friends. I also put up cherry blossom lights (my roommate has matching ones) and there's a vase with (fake) flowers, which both make my dorm seem like my own little garden. As a junior, I feel as though I've been pretty overwhelmed with my academics and extracurriculars, so I use this dorm space as an area where I can focus on my schoolwork and stay calm.

My studio portrait was taken at the place that holds a lot of meaning for me, where I loved the most and spent countless hours; my workplace. I used to worked at this restaurant about 9 months, almost everyday. It became a significant part of my daily routine, allowing me to meet new people and gain diverse experiences. The apron I am wearing in the photo represents my responsibility and personal growth during working here.

In the background of the picture, you can see diverse posters, LP records, unique lighting, books with book shelf and the photo of us. These details show the lively atmosphere of the restaurant and remind me of the mix of cultures and styles we enjoyed there. It also connects with the lecture that talked about how 1950s photographers in West Africa often used colorful and creative elements. Therefore, the photo contains those items serve as my precious experiences at the restaurant and reflect what modern life means to me - balancing work, friendships, and personal growth.

My studio portrait was taken in my dorm room where I reside working as an RA on campus in the H community! Here I draw and work on my illustrations as I aspire to one day have my own graphic novel/manga. Here is where my school work also occasionally gets done but I enjoy doing my work elsewhere like during freetime during my job or in the library, as I prefer my desk to be a place of relaxation. There are many emblems of modernity in the photo such as my computer I use to do work on as well as play video games with my friends. My upper section of my desk has several sentimental items I've collected overtime such as a collection of rocks and minerals from Chile the country my family and I are from. Overall I can't wait to see what future studio portraits and studios I'll have throughout my life

My studio portrait is in the painting studio of Staller. I felt like for the past two semesters that this has become my second home. I work on many different projects and have met many different people that I have grown close to. The cartoon characters, Crayon Shin-chan and Doraemon that I painted are modern, a childhood favorite for many. Another thing is my headphones, which I now can't live without as music is life. In the studio, I get to observe other people experiment with acrylic paint, abstraction, nonrepresentational, and mixed media. The studio is where I spend my weekends, eating, editing videos, talking to friends, and bettering my skills. Before this, I most likely would've been in my dorm or floating around.

I chose to include this area because it is part of the space I created to make this room feel more like home. I keep comforting objects and photos to make it a more enjoyable space for me. Currently it is filled with drawings that were given to me by my little cousins for my birthday. I also have small notes and cards from some of my friends and my Grandma. This space allows me to stay connected to the people I love and the environment that I had been comfortable in for so long. I get constant reminders of the people that I love waiting for me when I get to come home.

My desk area in my room is where I start my mornings, getting ready for the day ahead. It’s a place where I can unwind after socializing, allowing me to reflect on everything I need to do and recharge. I often take some time to read books or watch Netflix here, making it a cozy space for both relaxation and productivity. On top of my desk, I have some of my skincare products and other essentials that I use daily, keeping them easily accessible. My desk is also decorated with Photo Booth pictures of friends and family, which remind me of happy memories. Looking at these pictures always makes me smile and feel a sense of home. It’s a small but meaningful space where I feel connected to the people I love. The decor and organization of my desk make it a personal retreat, a place where I can gather my thoughts and feel at peace. Overall, my desk area serves as a comfort zone where I can both reflect and recharge.

My modernity would be my water boiler and Euro Carafe (Thermal water storage). Other things on my desk are my laptop, headphones, mouse, mousepad, battery pack and some forks. Most of these items can show modernity as they are all essential tools in our world today as almost everyone uses the internet and listen to music. I decided on my dorm room because it's quiet and easier to focus on work and I spent the majority of time on campus here.

Hello everyone, for my studio portrait, I chose to capture a moment from my weekly drive to the dog park with my best friend, Dominic, in the background. Living in Florida and working 40 hours a week means I spend a lot of time in the car. But these trips to the park are special; they lift the vibe of the week and give us both a chance to unwind. It’s something we look forward to.

Both the car and my dog symbolize my modernity and transition into adulthood. In this final semester, I’m stepping into a new chapter with a great internship, supported by Dominic, my friends, and the life I’m building. This portrait will remind me of the happiness I’ve found, the start of my career, and my commitment to giving Dominic the best life I can. Looking back, I’ll see all the hard work I put in during college and know that it was all worth it.

At my desk there is a console to play games and a stack of games. This is what I do in modern times to have some fun. This is also where all my schoolwork and studying is done. I also always keep a book in my desk to read between doing other things because I think even now, physical books are a modern and important way to get information and enjoy good stories. The most used thing at my desk is my laptop where I do all my schoolwork, surf the web for my hobbies, and take care of whatever I may have to do. My set up is pretty simplistic but it encaptures what I need to get by and have a little fun at this stage in my life.

Hi! I chose to set up my studio portrait at my desk in my dorm room, a space that has come to represent my daily life and routine as a student. This desk is where I’ve dedicated countless hours to studying for exams, working on assignments, and challenging myself to be a diligent and hardworking student. It's not just a place for academics, it’s a corner of my world where I also find moments to relax, watching movies or Netflix after a long day. In many ways, this desk captures the balance between my dedication to my studies and my need for relaxation. It’s where focus and rest meet in my life.

Over time, this small space has become a reflection of who I am right now: a student committed to learning, growth, and resilience, but also someone who values balance and self-care. Therefore, I chose it as my "home studio" because it embodies not just the work I put into my academic goals but also the importance of taking time for myself amidst the demands of student life.

Hello everyone. My studio portrait was taken in my new laboratory, a place I chose because it’s where I spend most of my time these days. I enjoy studying in a quiet, less crowded environment, and this lab provides exactly that. Here, I can focus deeply on my work and also have access to help from fellow students when needed.

As a computer science major, my workspace is equipped with a computer and monitors. I keep my desk minimal, with only the essentials—my monitors, computer, water bottle, and a notebook—to avoid distractions. This setup allows me to stay focused on what I need to complete and explore. Additionally, the view from the window offers a moment of relaxation and inner peace whenever I need it.

I love this space because it feels like a place where I can overcome any challenge, no matter how difficult. This lab not only inspires me but also brings me comfort as I progress through my academic journey.

Hello everyone, I took my studio portrait at my desk since that’s where I find myself a good chunk of the time- whether that be because of studying, homework, or having a snack. Included as the mainstay on my desk is my laptop. Without it, I would be pretty lost when it comes to schoolwork due to online assignments. Next to my laptop is a mug I drink my coffee out of, almost every morning to try and start the day right. Additionally, I usually keep a snack or two on my desk since I can find myself being there for extended periods of time. I like working at my desk since it’s something that’s pretty consistent and it’s a place where I don’t easily get distracted when I’m trying to get things done.

Hi! For my studio portrait, I decided to use my sewing area. My home studio consists of a desk, a sewing machine, some purple fabric, two rolls of white lace, and some of my crochet granny squares that I intend on using to make a pillow. I chose to use this area because I feel as though it represents me and my interests. I spend a lot of time working on sewing and crochet projects here. Sometimes I will spend hours at this desk finishing one of my projects. I love to create and wear clothes from just some fabric and thread or a ball of yarn. I have always been very passionate about fashion and creating things, so this area allows for me to do that.

My studio portrait was taken at my desk in the dorm room, where I spend most of my time either studying or watching dramas. Though I spend a lot of time here working on assignments, I still see it as a calm and relaxing space. On the side of my desk, I have a fan because it can get really hot in the dorm. Some emblems of modernity that are on my desk are my laptop and echo dot. I have a big organizer which includes my skincare and makeup. For me, skincare is the most important step to the beginning and end of my day. On the left side, I’ve set up a laptop riser for my macbook and other essentials include my water bottle, box of tissue, and a mirror. I also have a picket of my bias Jun from the kpop group Seventeen. The echo dot is one of my favorite things on my desk because I love listening to music. My laptop represents modernity because technology is very important to college students nowadays and without it, we are not able to do work or communicate. Overall, my desk is a place where I can relax, but also be focused on schoolwork.

My studio portrait is my desk in my dorm at Stony Brook! I chose to take a portrait (selfie) here because this is where I spend most of my time getting ready, studying, or just relaxing. I have a bunch of little trinkets and figurines on my desk depicting things I love. I have a hanging plant, jewelry holder, and other materialistic objects I’ve gotten throughout my time at Stony Brook. One specific trinket on my desk is the little mermaid funko pop which was given to me by someone I love. Everything on my desk has meaning to me even if it’s minuscule. My piece of modernity would be my laptop as it is something I use daily and if I didn’t have it I don’t know what I would do in my spare time. I listen to music on it, watch movies, and do homework. This space is where I’m most comfortable in and it holds a lot of memories.

Hi! I took my studio portrait at my desk, which is where I typically sit besides the occasional feeling a little lazy and I will lay in bed with my laptop on my lap to do homework or study. However I chose my desk because most of the time it is my go to spot as I feel more productive sitting up with my laptop on a flat surface. I also have my iPad and pencil next to me which I am able to set up and connect the screen to my laptop so I have two screens which is pretty cool!

Spending a lot of time sitting and doing work there are usually lots of breaks, so my favorite part of where my desk is, I have a mini fridge right next to it and some snacks nearby as well. This helps me get my energy back up to get through all of my assignments. I don't like my desk too cluttered as I enjoy the minimalistic look better and keeping my space clean. It really helps me just knock out all my work and not get too distracted so I can get all of my work done.

My studio portrait was taken in my dorm room, which, for me, is the one place on campus where I can be alone and unwind after a day of classes, exams, and socializing. My studio setup includes my skincare products and school essentials—like my laptop, iPad, monitor, notebook, pens, and pencils. I spend most of my time here, working on homework, studying for exams, playing games, and chatting with friends. These items are emblems of my modernity since technology plays a crucial role in my academics, entertainment, and social life. Occasionally, when I need a change of scenery, I’ll head to the lounge to work before returning to relax with Netflix or scroll through TikTok. I keep my skincare items and other daily necessities on my desk for easy access, serving not only as a practical convenience but also as a reminder to stick to my routine. My desk is also decorated with small items given to me by friends. In addition, I typically keep some snacks on my desk in case I get hungry when studying or simply want to snack while watching Netflix or YouTube. Overall, my dorm room is a space of comfort, where I can decompress and enjoy some much-needed alone time.

My studio portrait was taken in front of my desk in my bedroom. I dedicated a lot of time (and money :') ) to create the perfect space for me. I have a display case of sonny angels/calico critters/mofusand cats and smiskis, which are mostly little blind box trinkets I personally love to collect. I have many little Sanrio plushies or figures, or anime related figures such as from SpyxFamily, Pokemon, etc. I also love collecting jelly cats and Labubu plushies. I love flowers but can't for the life of me keep them alive, so I have a jelly cat bouquet my mom got for me, and a lego bouquet my boyfriend got for me that we built together on one of our first dates. As you can see, I love the color pink. Just about every detail is pink. I also have polaroid pictures of my passed pets to look at whenever I miss them, and pictures of me and my boyfriend framed on my wall. I love my very "girly" space. I wanted my space to feel cozy and welcoming, since I spend most of my time here. I love every intricate detail that shows more and more of who I am as a person and what my interests are. I love finding things that I know will fit perfectly in my space and finding creative ways to display them. Lastly, above all, the most important item in the picture is my computer. I use my pc daily for homework, studying, listening to music, talking with friends and video games. I'm very grateful to be able to have a pretty and pink room that I'm proud to call my own :)

My studio portrait was taken at my dorm. I have a laptop and an iPad on my desk as tools for study. I also put my cosmetics and skincare products on it for my convenience. I like to practice makeup and help others with makeup when I have free time. Seeing others become more confident after makeup always makes me happy and feel accomplished. I also like to use my iPad to paint in my free time, which makes me feel relaxed. I chose my dormitory desk as the background because I spend a lot of time in this place every day. I always use my laptop and iPad to study. I think my laptop and iPad are emblems of my modernity. They represent that with the advancement of technology, people can have more and more convenient ways to study. They also make me more organized. I can also use them for some entertainment and watch videos in my free time. My desk features my school essentials: my laptop, iPad, AirPods, and my white offboard calendar, which all help me through the tough college days. I also have my skincare products, which I use every day, highlighting the importance of self-care and love. My desk is where I feel a mix of emotions, it's where I face the stress of studying and the comfort of playing games or getting ready to go out by doing my makeup. A special touch in my portrait is the souvenir block from California that says, "Together by the sea is my favorite place to be," a personal reminder of my boyfriend and how we first met on a cruise. This setup reflects my daily essentials and the nature of my space, blending productivity, self-care, and cherished memories all in one meaningful spot.

In the background, I included my skincare and makeup on the top shelf, which highlights my interest in self-care and personal expression—an essential part of modern identity. The top shelf also has some plush toys that I keep as a symbol of comfort. The pinned paintings and papers on the corkboard add a personal touch, showcasing my creative side and the inspirations I keep close and in a place i see everyday. I decided to include my laptop, iPad, and notebook, as they are the tools that keep me connected to the world and support my studies.

Hello. My studio portrait was taken in my dorm in Kelly. It is decorated with random cool items I've found over the last year. This is the place in which I do everything. Where I sit down for hours working on assignments, studying for my exams, and doing my homework. While my studio seems simple enough, with a lack of decorations (work in progress), it is more than just a desk, it is a constantly evolving space which describes my life. When im relaxed and carefree my desk is neat and organized, yet when there is a rush to finish assignments or study, it reflects my disorganization, quickly getting piled up with papers and notebooks. My studio is a reflection of myself.

I spend a lot of time at my desk completing assignments, working on projects, or relaxing. Thus my desk is arranged in a way to make all of that easirer for me. To begin with I have a speaker on my desk to play music and help me focus while studying. I also have a monitor which connects to my laptop to make a double monitor setup. This is useful for me as I'm a cs major and the extra display makes my life easier. I then have a variety of decorations that brighten my mood and are important to me. For example I have 3 of my favorite fictional characters figureines. I also have bottle of coke and a bell which were more random things I thought would be cool to display. With this setup I'm able to have an interesting space for me to do whatever I need to.

Because my favorite color is purple, I painted the walls that color. I only keep a few things on my desk because I get distracted easily. I usually have a calendar on my desk where I like to mark my plans and draw some little illustrations. I use my computer and iPad as a sign of my modernity because I spend most of my time with them, such as doing homework or watching Netflix.

I decided to make my studio portrait my desk setup at my house. This is where I spend a good amount of time in the day doing work, studying, researching or even playing video games and reading books. I'm a massive Star Wars fan so I keep a droid on my desk for added decoration. The droid which is made in a factory, is a testament to the modern times we live in where thousands of these droids can be made in a single day. I also have a Playstation 4 controller for whenever I want to wind down from the stresses of schoolwork. Video games are a great source of enjoyment in the modern world. I also keep a couple of unfinished books that I plan to read behind my monitor. Although reading itself is a practice as old as time, novels are relatively modern. My laptop, where I do all my schoolwork is also a testament to my modernity. It holds access to the world’s vast knowledge and information, all in a compact device that fits right on my lap.

Hi, this is my studio art . I focused on my desk and the plant shelf I made myself. This space is important for my mental health and makes studying more enjoyable. The plants act as natural air humidifiers, improving the air quality in my room and creating a calming atmosphere. My desk is neat and serves as a dedicated area for my studies. The plant shelf adds a touch of nature, making the space feel more inviting. I enjoy taking care of the plants because they bring life to my workspace and help reduce stress. This corner has become a special place where I can focus on my work while being surrounded by greenery, which boosts my mood and helps me be more productive. I love how this little setup reflects my personality and creates a positive environment for learning.

I have represented my home studio as it typically appears daily. I believe this background best reflects who I am. I usually spend most of my time at home, especially at my desk. I dislike having too many items on my desk, so I prefer to keep only the necessary stuff and make it a habit to tidy up every day. My clean and organized desk, with only the essentials, reflects my personality well. Also, I chose to symbolize modernity with "Brightspace." Before the advancement of online technologies, all assignments and communications with professors had to be conducted offline. However, each school has its platform, which has made student life much more convenient in recent years. Brightspace is no exception. Checking Brightspace daily to monitor assignment progress, exam results, and course announcements has become a part of my routine. This has created an environment where I can focus more on my studies compared to when Brightspace wasn't available. Therefore, I believe Brightspace is the item that best represents my modern lifestyle, my student life, and who I am today.

This simple setup of white bedding with a pink throw blanket creates a calm, inviting atmosphere. On the wall next to my bed, there are posters and pictures, adding a personal touch to the space. While I often try to study at the library, I find myself working on my bed quite often. There’s something about the comfort of my bed that helps me focus and be productive, even though it’s a place typically associated with rest.

In terms of modernity, this portrait reflects my balance between work and relaxation. My bed, typically a symbol of rest, becomes a space where I can merge productivity and comfort, which is a modern approach to navigating both academic demands and personal well-being.

It is generally pretty empty without much of a mess since I think better than my workplace is just clear and clean. I chose a low table simply because I enjoying sitting lower on the ground, overtime sitting on the ground became comforting to me because it gives a since of stability. If I'm not working on assignments, I would have a tea set on the table, where I typically drink green or black tea. The large table allows me to display my collect of accessories. Overall this place is a comfort zone for me where I can think freely and relax.

My stop portrait would be my favorite area in my house: the corner of my bedroom. I usually do all of my work here, also my gaming at night after I get back school would also be at this corner. The background that I have was my collection wall. Every piece of blind box figure here was either bought or given to me by my Asian friends. I’m also Asian, but I’ve never went to China before, so these figures are there to remind me that I should visit it once when I’m older. My gaming laptop (also my college laptop) with my gaming keyboard is the only thing that is giving me comfort whenever I use my laptop for classes and assignments. The soft clicking of the keyboard gives me a sense of comfort, with my headphones on. Pure paradise! I love my comfort zone, it has everything that I need. Even though we can’t see, but underneath my table, I have a small fridge and a portable rack that holds my snacks and drinks.

Even though this isn't my own room in my home, I do enjoy staying here and sitting at my computer desk. Having a space to myself is more comfortable than anything. My laptop and keyboard and mouse will serve as my emblem of modernity. This laptop is a gaming orientated laptop with a gaming keyboard and gaming mouse that has been with me for years and is still going well. I usually use it for gaming, watching TV and working on my homework. On the wall are various album posters of one of my favorite singers and some positive words to remind me to keep it that way from time to time. Hopefully it will stay that way.

My studio portrait is my fish tank with my ceramic art pieces and cameras! This is where I spend most of my time to unwind after a hard day. My fish tank is my current obsession and gives me a lot of joy and relaxation. I think of it as my best work to date because I had to design every aspect of it. My fish tank is integral to my mental health as it gives me a space to breathe and forget what is troubling me, creating a calm environment for me to bask in. I enjoy taking care of my fish and plants and watching them flourish day to day. My fish tank a month ago looks completely different than it does today, reminding me that growth is always happening even when I don’t see it. This background reflects exactly who I am, a nature lover at heart! I hope you take notice to see that above my fish tank is some of my ceramic art that I've made. I usually do most of my painting right in front of my fish tank, actually on my bedroom floor before I fire it! I also made sure to include my cameras! I found a love for photography in high school. It is one of my favorite hobbies, and whenever I am stressed, I go outside for a walk and take a camera with me to capture nature. This setup beautifully reflects my personality and the modern touches in my life. My fish tank, powered by electricity, brings a modern element of nature into my space. My cameras, both digital and Polaroid, represent the evolution of photography, blending tradition with contemporary technology. Even my ceramics, shaped and fired with today’s glazes and techniques, reflect the transformation of timeless art. I hope you enjoyed my studio portrait and it offers you a glimpse into my version of modernity.

My studio portrait is of the space where I am living this semester in West Apartments. This space is very important to me because it is where I spend most of my time. It is where I study, work on assignments, and relax. In this space, I also watch movies and listen to music to take a break and unwind. On my desk, you will always find my phone, laptop, iPad, and AirPods. These are the items that, to me, best show modern life in this space. I use them every day, and I think they are very important for my daily routine. Without these items, it would be much harder to do my usual activities. I would struggle to study for exams or finish assignments without them because they are very useful tools. But they are not just for studying; they also help me relax. I need them whenever I watch movies or listen to music, which is how I like to relax after a busy day. So, my phone, laptop, iPad, and AirPods are not just symbols of modern life. They are also necessary items that I use every day for both work and relaxation. They truly make my life easier and more enjoyable.

I chose this setting because it's where I feel most myself, balancing between my academic life and relaxation. The background includes my gaming setup, textbooks, and a few personal items that show my daily environment and mix of interests.

For my emblem of modernity, I decided to include my gaming gear and computer. These represent not only the technology that's a constant part of my life but also how tech connects us to others and provides both work and play in the same space. I thought this was fitting for a modern self-portrait, as it shows the versatility and accessibility of today’s technology, blending with everyday life and symbolizing how I navigate both learning and leisure.

By showing myself , I wanted to reflect a version of me—focused on school and driven by my goals, but also grounded in the present with things I enjoy. Some people might feel claustrophobic, but I find that the enclosed space helps me organize my thoughts and think better. I keep many of my essential items on this table, such as my glasses, phone, iPad, and books. Since covid, I have always liked working from my bed because it gives me a sense of comfort, and it’s the best place that helps me clear my head. This is where my roommate and I have some of our deep conversations, this space is usually used when I study late or eat and watch a movie. I have pictures of the people that I love that emblems my modernity because I meet them at my time at SBU. Usually for a lot of people a clean space is a clean mind but for me, I like my place a little untidy because it resembles my mind and how I think through doing my homework and exams. I like sitting here because I can sit down and not see my bed which helps in my productivity. This studio portrait adapts accordingly to my emotions and what I need to do for that day. And when I need to wind down I can just hop over my desk into my bed!

Hey everybody! My studio portrait captures my dorm room, which serves as both my workspace and my personal sanctuary. My setup is pretty minimalist, designed to keep things relaxing but also to create a focused environment where I can "lock in" on my work. In the background, you can see my essentials on the desk: my computer, iPad, and calculator. Each of these items plays a big role in my day-to-day life as a student, especially as a computer engineering major. Together, these items show how technology is used in our daily routines and studies symbolizing a modern approach to learning. In my studio , there is also a stack of financial books. I love to read in my free time. Then there is my bed, this is my favorite place on campus. I prioritize my rest more than anything. My bed represents the importance of self care and maintaining a healthy balance with my academics and my sanity.

Good evening. I took this selfie in my parents home office. This is where I do my school work when I'm home. Sometimes I'll come home for the weekends and this is where I do my school work opposed to my dorms desk where I do my work while I'm at school. It is a little bland because my parents like to keep things nice and neat. My at school desk is a little more messy with pictures of my friends from home, girlfriend, and family including pets. This desk and set up that I use while at home is very good though. It allows me to stay and remain focused, without distractions which is probably why my parents use it for work. The clean desk represents an organized mind which then translates to organized and good work.

For this studio-portrait, I chose to set up my "studio" in front of my bookshelf, where I keep my personal art collection. This space is close to me because it holds not only my favorite books but also my creative projects, capturing both my love for art and reading. Each piece on this shelf has a story or moment tied to it; the paintings, for example, represent times when I was inspired to express myself with color and shape.

Each item on the shelf has its own personality, and together, they represent different parts of myself. This display of books and artwork also shows my blend of interests – my love for literature, art, and design. I have arranged them in a way that brings me joy and serves as a source of inspiration. I chose this background because it’s a mix of everything I enjoy – art, books, and small decorations that make me feel at home. This shelf is my own little "studio" where I can reflect, create, and be inspired.

For my home studio, I set up a self-portrait around my desk, where I spend countless hours doing assignments, studying for exams, and diving into my gaming world. Since this area is where the serious and enjoyable aspects of my life collide, it perfectly captures my daily experiences. I'm surrounded by the necessities of my setup in the picture: my monitor is illuminated, with my desk top open with schoolwork on one side and the loading screen for my game on the other, which illustrates how easy it is to get distracted between work and gaming sessions. In the corner, my custom-built gaming PC with RGB lighting is glowing. My controller and headset, which serve as my personal "pause" button after a lengthy study session, are also on the desk, showing my love of gaming. This "studio" arrangement symbolizes how I use technology to help me strike a balance between school and gaming. My workspace demonstrates how technology has ingrained itself into every aspect of my life, from online friendships to education. It's more than just a desk; it represents how I'm juggling school and gaming.

I am a lash technician and in this picture which was taken by my co worker , you can actually see me lashing a client of mine. Like many others forms of art, my "art" is lashing. Whenever I lash my mind completely escapes reality and whenever I am not studying or at school, I am most likely here making handmade volume fans and then proceeding to then glueing the extension to every single one of my client's natural lash.

I decided to chose my bed/nightstand as my studio portrait. I am a commuter so this is where I get most of my assignments and studying done. Most people will say that it is quite unfitting to study on your bed but this is what has worked for me thus far and I haven't had any problems. :)In my nightstand, I keep the necessary tools like my calculator, headphones, water, textbooks and flashcards. It is important for me to have a comfortable space or else I simply would not get anything done. This corner of my bed has seen me go through a wide range of emotions. From shedding tears due to studying throughout my to academic journey to bursts of laughter with my friends/family. I am super grateful to have this comfort space in my home.

I set up my studio portrait in the Africana Studies Library where I'm a student assistant! This is where I spend most of my school time and as such, is where I get most of my work done. Being able to surround myself with books from the past combined with the quiet atmosphere helps me stay focused and driven to study, read or doodle occasionally before my next class begins. An object I have that shows modernity is my laptop. I think that it contrasts well with the many books that are in this library, some being over 100 years old. To me the juxtaposition of sitting in this library while using a modern piece of technology shows how far society has come in terms of its technological advancements

I included items like my makeup, hair dryer, and my Dae Hair Styler Cream, which I highly recommend. Back home, I have my vanity with all the same fun things I need to get ready, but on campus, my sink suffices. I spend my mornings here daily and often get ready in the evenings while watching a show on my iPad.

My favorite things are laid out on the desk with me: my Glossier You lotion, favorite perfume Burberry Her, Dyson, and Rare Beauty makeup. These items truly embody who I am and help me face the day with confidence. My family and friends would agree this setup perfectly represents my modern style since many of these items were thoughtful gifts from them.

I decided to set up my studio portrait in the multicultural center at student union on Stony Brook’s campus. While there are not many objects of my belonging besides my computer because it is a public area, the setting is still emblematic of the area in which I choose to surround myself when working. I find that I am unable to focus when I am in my dorm and prefer to work with friends surrounded by other people. The multicultural center is a wonderful place to work because of the convenience of the location, the calm lighting, and good seating. Often times there are also events being set up there or in other spaces at the union.

As someone who lives on campus but still frequents home every so often, this is where I get my work done. I also am accompanied by my cats when I'm here (this one is Daisy)! The dining room is also the major setting for nearly all family events, like meals and board games which are always so fun! It also triples as another seating area for movies and shows with my friends as the living room TV is visible from it. With the workload of college, it can be hard to let myself unwind sometimes, but its always possible when I'm home and doing things with the people I care about

Hi guys! For my home studio project, I decided to take a picture of myself in front of my desk and bed in my dorm room. Although sometimes cluttered, my desk is one of the places where I find myself doing different things. At times, it is the place where I study and do my homework, while other times, it’s my dining table or even a crafting table on relaxing days. On my bulletin board, I often thumbtack pictures or objects that hold a lot of sentimental value to me. I have a dog named Lily, who I only see on the weekends and therefore miss a lot, so I have photos of her attached to my board as well as one of her plastic bags, as weird as it seems. Every time I stress out about school or the assignments that pile up, I look at my bulletin board and see her picture, which inspires me to keep going and work hard until the weekend arrives and I can see her. In my space, I also often have my electronics, such as my laptop and iPad, which is where I do the majority of my work. This represents modernity since I used to use paper and pen more often before. In my home studio, I also have a small section where I organize my perfumes and makeup. I utilize this section every day before I go to class and enjoy just taking a few minutes every morning to relax and put on some eyeliner before a long day. I also got into a habit of collecting the can tabs from cans I opened last semester, so I have a little section in my perfume organizer dedicated to only holding those tabs. Right next to my desk is my bed, which is one of my safe spots. From watching Netflix to getting some sleep, my bed is one of the few things that provide me with complete comfort. To me, nothing is better than getting into bed to snooze after a long day of classes and studying. The hard part is getting back up the next morning and doing it all over again though!

I am not home often throughout the day so when I get to relax in my bed it is always rewarding which is why I felt it was a good choice of scenery. With the little free time I do have, I spend it with things of interest such as what I’ve shown in the picture. I spend most of my time drawing and sometimes even simply coloring in a coloring book. I enjoy markers and colored pencils when coloring so I included that into my area of space as well. My stuffed animals are there because they took contribute to the relaxation felt in coloring in my bed and always have brought a sense of comfort among me since I was a child.

I took my studio portrait in front of my desk. This is where I spend nearly the entirety of my time, since I spend most of my time on my laptop due to being a computer science major. Occasionally, on some weekends, I go back home for work, but otherwise, I'm doing work at my desk on my laptop, so I keep everything organized and easily accessible from there. On the left side of the picture, I have a case of my notebooks and folders, and on the right side of my desk, a stack of 2 boxes of protein bars behind a small unopened box of seaweed and a container of Vaseline, which are unfortunately blocked from view because of my large head. On the top of my desk, I have everything ranging from shaving gel, shaving razors, and the rest of the products I use in the bathroom, as well as a box of honey ginger tea (which is actually visible in the picture) for whenever I get sick. This desk is where I routinely suffer from cramming my coursework, job work, and research work, but also where I feel the most cozy and get to relax the most often. It is also where I fall asleep most frequently, aside from my bed.

For my studio portrait, I decided to take a picture of my workspace because it’s where I spend most of my time as a student. This desk is where I study, work on assignments, and sometimes just sit and brainstorm ideas. I’ve tried to make it as comfortable and organized as possible because I feel like having a nice setup helps me stay focused and less stressed.

I added some plants to the space because they make the room feel more alive and relaxing. The desk itself is simple and clean, which I like because it keeps me from getting distracted. My iMac is front and center since it’s what I use for most of my schoolwork, whether I’m researching for a project or typing up papers. I also keep a desk lamp for those late nights when I’m finishing up homework or studying for exams.

This space isn’t just for schoolwork, though. It’s also where I can sit down and relax, light a candle, or just organize my thoughts.
